August 10, 2012 Weather: Scattered Thunderstorms, High of 80 Degrees.

Notices:
Events today include a free tribute concert for Nick Ashford (“Ain’t No Mountain High Enough”) at Lincoln Center.

David Longshore, who was mugged earlier this year at 108th and Broadway, tells us that the police still haven’t found the three men who beat him up, but that the city has listened to his request for better lighting at the corner. “In April, I had written to the NYCDOT, requesting that the street lighting be improved on the corner of 108th Street and Broadway.  Yesterday, I received the following response from Manhattan Borough Commissioner Margaret Forgione: ‘…the Division of Street Lighting has informed me that they will install an arm and luminaire to an existing traffic signal pole on the southwest corner of Broadway in the direction of 108th Street.  The installation will take place during the first quarter of 2013.'”

News:
Cabbie Emmanuel Kantanka was arrested for backing into two girls with his cab in Central Park at 59th Street and 6th Avenue on Thursday and driving off. The girls were taken to the hospital but apparently did not have bad injuries. (NY Daily News)

Partially treated sewage from a Westchester plant has been pouring into the Hudson River, and could lead to the  swimming portion of the Triathlon this weekend getting canceled. Also, maybe don’t swim in the Hudson for the next few days? (NY1)

A retail space inhabited by the Food Emporium at 250 West 90th Street faces possible foreclosure because its owner used the space as collateral for a loan and is now being sued. (The Real Deal)

Re: the poor lighting on 108th street and Broadway … They’re going to install a new light during the first quarter of 2013!???!! That’s half a year away at best! That hardly sounds satisfactory. That corner is notoriously dark. I wish something could be done sooner. It’s just a light, for pete’s sake!

Great point e.m. Maybe more community pressure could convince them to do it sooner.
