Events are up through Tuesday — look for music and a movie about South Africa in Central Park, and a screening of the Facebook movie The Social Network, both free.
News:
St. Volodymyr’s Cathedral on 82nd Street rents out its space to other groups for parties — and the music from the parties is so loud that it rattles the windows and walls of the co-op at 172 West 82nd, according to a lawsuit in NY Supreme Court. “We’ve asked nicely,” one resident told the Post. “We’ve done everything we can to talk to them neighbor to neighbor. It keeps happening. Filing a case is just a last ditch effort.” (NY Post)
Celeste Holm, the star of All About Eve who died earlier this year, owned a $10 million Central Park West apartment now being fought over by her husband and children. The New York Times also covered this issue last year. (DNAinfo)
Some reasons behind the city’s decision to open more emergency shelters like the controversial ones just installed on 95th Street: the homeless population has risen 18% in the last year and the city’s rent-subsidy program for homeless families has ended. (NY Times)
A man who was shot to death by police in Times Square over the weekend had been arrested earlier this year for cursing at people while walking at 66th and Broadway. (NY Daily News)
A 68-year-old man was mugged on 73rd Street and Riverside Drive at 2 a.m. on Thursday. His wallet and cell phone were taken. (NY Post)
RE: St. Volodymyr’s Cathedral. Frankly I don’t understand how they can allow dancing without a cabaret license. This license is required for dancing if you are also selling alcohol. The city of New York revised the zoning in the 1970’s, which prohibited dance clubs on the entire upper west side, other than any existing venues.
Well then, now this bachelor understands better why there’s no pleasant nightlife within walking distance of the Columbia area. Gee thanks, grandma.
