Meet a true legend Monday night at the Upper West Side Apple Store on Broadway and 67th Street when Harry Belafonte makes an appearance at 7 p.m.
Apple is hosting a Black Music Month in June, showcasing intimate concerts with R&B, hip hop, and soul artists (of course, almost all modern American music has roots in black America). Next week, Ziggy Marley will be appearing. There is no charge and the earlier you get there the better seat you’ll get.
Belafonte has lived on the Upper West Side (I assume he still does). Here’s Apple’s description of his career:
“From his rise to fame as an international calypso star to his moving experiences touring a segregated country, Harry Belafonte personifies the American civil rights movement. He was the first artist ever to sell a million albums — and the second American to be named UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador.”
