Ben Darr sent us the following video showing a fire hydrant around Broadway and 81st Street shooting water into the street at around 3:15 a.m. on Sunday. A friend of his said that the hydrant was already gushing water around 12:30 a.m. The FDNY did not respond to our questions about what might have caused the hydrant to shoot water or when it was turned off.
The FDNY told us that the Department of Environmental Protection maintains the hydrants. FDNY turned this one off around 3:30 a.m. after being notified.
“Ladder 25 was notified that morning and responded to close the hydrant. It should be noted that opening hydrants like that (which may have happened here) is dangerous and lowers the water pressure needed to fight fires.”
