THE UNIVERSE REALLY DOES REVOLVE AROUND THE UPPER WEST SIDE

Scott Matthews took the photos above and below, using multiple exposures to trace the paths of airplanes into and out of LaGuardia Airport, and the trail of stars as viewed from our spinning earth — or more precisely his spinning apartment near 106th street and Broadway.

Here’s his description of the top photo: “It’s 24 separate 30 second exposures, all merged into one image. The diagonal lines pointing toward the top-right are stars as the Earth rotates, and the cluster toward the lower center is traffic in/out of LaGuardia airport.”

“This time looking north, you can see PS 165 and the Cathedral and a wee bit of Riverside Church. About 40 minutes total, 10 degrees of rotation.”

Our primary goal is to create a safe and respectful space where a broad spectrum of voices can be heard. We welcome diverse viewpoints and encourage readers to engage critically with one another’s ideas, but never at the expense of civility. Disagreement is expected—even encouraged—but it must be expressed with care and consideration. Comments that take cheap shots, escalate conflict, or veer into ideological warfare detract from the constructive spirit we aim to cultivate.
