This Week: Both the Northern Lights AND a Comet in the Skies Over New York City

A week that sees both the Northern Lights and a comet in the skies over New York? Maybe just a great coincidence?

Saturday, from Pier i (70th Street), the weather was perfect for one of New York’s first opportunities to see Comet Tsuchinshan-ATLAS. The comet was initially only visible from the southern hemisphere, but this week and for the rest of October, it will be visible in the early evening skies, looking west.

Once it moves away, it won’t be back for 80,000 years.

Attached are some photos taken Saturday evening.

I saw the comet last night. It’s very faint and hard to see with the naked eye. In fact I almost gave up and headed home after a 2nd night of going down to the fence along the water at 96th street. I thought it was hidden by clouds. But then I decided to just take a picture of one clear part of the sky to see if a time exposure picked up anything and lo and behold, I got a great shot. Once I realized it was right in front of my eyes the whole time, I could see it a bit unaided but was then able to take a few really good shots. And all I had was an iphone 15.
