News
It’s Rosh Hashanah, the Jewish New Year, and we’re taking the day off to reflect and recharge.

But not before announcing the winner of our latest contest, in which readers were asked to guess the total number of views that West Side Rag has gotten since it was started in May, 2011.

In that first eight-month year, the Rag got 260,529 views. The following full year, 2012, it got 1,546,501, and the number has increased exponentially ever since. Our best year yet was 2020 — when we served as a “lifeline for a quarter-million Upper West Siders” during that first stretch of the pandemic, according to New York Magazine. Our total views that year were 15,815,959!

The grand total, as of 10 pm Friday, September 23, 2022, is: 81,861,856

And the winner is Monica Benz, who guessed 80,150,000.

Monica will get two tickets to the first night of the gala Taste of the Upper West Side, when 32 of the total of 64 UWS restaurants, some not yet open, will offer tastings of their best dishes. Unlimited wine and spirits will flow and an entire corner will be devoted to confections.

Congratulations, Monica, and enjoy the evening.

For those who didn’t win, you can still purchase tickets here. Sponsored by the Columbus Avenue Business Improvement District (BID), all proceeds from Taste of the Upper West Side will go toward improving the neighborhood.

Have a sweet holiday and great week!

Congrats Monica! I had bet 80,000,000…very close behind you. 🙂 Congrats to the West Side Rag as well for such great readership numbers, although I am not surprised. I appreciate and enjoy your reporting on all things happening on the UWS.

IMO, the contest winner, Monica Benz, should get a bonus for coming so close. Her guess was 97.9% accurate, and when dealing with a number that was over 80,000, that is quite impressive. I’m curious as to what the runner-up guessed. I assume there is no price for second place. 😉
