Ye olde Upper West Side.
Local historian Jim Mackin has written a book on famous Upper West Siders — from Humphrey Bogart to Thurgood Marshall — including stories about 600 locals who have had a notable impact on the world. On Monday at 5:30 p.m., he’ll be holding a Zoom talk through the Bloomingdale Neighborhood History Group to discuss the book. The Zoom link is here and opens at 5 p.m.
The book, published by Fordham Press, is called Notable New Yorkers of Manhattan’s Upper West Side and a partial description is below.
What do Humphrey Bogart and Patty Hill (co-author of “Happy Birthday,” the most popular song of all time) have in common? Both of them once lived in the neighborhood of Morningside Heights and Bloomingdale, a strip of land that runs from the 90s to 125th Street, between the Hudson River and Central Park. Spanning hundreds of years, Notable New Yorkers of Manhattan’s Upper West Side is a compilation of stories of nearly 600 former residents who once called Manhattan’s Upper West Side home.
Caruso lived at the Ansonia in the early 1900’s, as did Babe Ruth, same location, 20-30 years later.
Lauren Bacall, Judy Garland & Boris Karloff, lived in the Dakota.
