Morning Bulletin: Building Hires Kosher Consultant, Taxicab Tragedy, Construction Worker Lawsuit

In the Lincoln Center subway station.

September 4, 2018 Weather: Sunny, with a high of 93 degrees.

Notices:
Human chess and more local events are on our calendar.

11-Year-Old Upper West Sider Nikki Bidun will compete on Top Chef Junior this Saturday, September 8th at 6pm on Universal Kids Network. Root for her!

News:
The Chamberlain on 87th Street hired a Kosher consultant to appeal to Jewish homebuyers. “On a recent tour of the building — where nearly 25 percent of units have sold and occupancy is expected this fall — Andrew Till, chief operating officer for Simon Baron, said that at the beginning of the design process his company hired Susie Fishbein, the author of popular kosher cookbooks, as a “kosher consultant.”…In the larger apartments, under-counter kitchen cabinets can easily be pulled out so a second dishwasher can slide in. Subzero refrigerators that can be programmed to operate on Sabbath mode — so the light doesn’t come on when the door is opened — were selected. Because Orthodox families tend to be large, laundry closets are commodious enough for two washers and two dryers, to handle heaps of clothes.”

A 30-year-old from the Bronx shot himself in the back of a cab on the Upper West Side on Saturday. He was pronounced dead at the hospital. “‘The guy didn’t say anything. All of a sudden, [the cabbie] hears a gunshot, turns around and sees the guy bleeding in the back seat,’ a law enforcement source said. The hack is devastated, said an official from his union.”

Workers are suing over pay at a condo site on 74th Street. “A group of 10 construction workers has filed suit in state and federal court alleging that the contractors who employed them on Greystone’s Upper West Side residential condominium project illegally cheated them out of overtime pay.

The JCC is partnering with a nonprofit that offers mikveh [ritual Jewish bath] education, and the Forward calls it “the trendy place to be in Manhattan’s Upper West Side.” Immersions will take place in “a local mikveh off-site.”

A nonprofit called WIN organized dance classes for homeless kids. “For two days, dozens of kids are taught hip hop dance by top dancers and choreographers at the Broadway Dance Center in the Upper West Side. While they may look like any other group of young, smiling children, each and every one also happens to come from a family homeless shelter.”

Unbelievable that Subzero is able to convince people to buy their refrigerators because they have “Sabbath modes.” Most orthodox people I know either unscrew the light bulb or put a piece of tape over the piece that activates the light when the fridge opens and closes.

I think I’m in the wrong line of work – I should be a “kosher consultant”

I live next door to the Greystone construction project on West 74th Street. I can’t speak to the pay dispute, but I can say that the outside walls, for now, are made out of cinder block.

The Kosher consultancy at the Chamberlain is ridiculous – particularly, “because Orthodox families tend to be large, laundry closets are commodious enough for two washers and two dryers, to handle heaps of clothes.”

This isn’t being marketed to hasidic families, for gods sakes. Sheesh.
