News:
An Upper West Side doorman saved a would-be jumper from the George Washington Bridge. “[Julio] De Leon has worked as a doorman at the same building on West 82nd Street for 31 years….’In one second, only in a second, I just moved and grabbed like this’ — his right arm curled like a shepherd’s crook — ‘and I keep him with me,’ Mr. De Leon said. ‘He started to see reality. He was crying. I tried to calm him down.'” If you love Upper West Side doormen (who doesn’t?!), you’ll love our series about them.
A woman arrested for a Connecticut bank robbery bears a resemblance to the woman wanted in a recent attempted Chase robbery on 79th Street. “Meighan Marie McSherry once had a promising career — she was on the prestigious Hofstra Law School trial team and was quoted in a national newspaper as an expert on the law. But that ended Thursday when the 46-year-old whip-smart Upper West Side resident was busted on charges she robbed a bank in Greenwich, Conn.”
A 40-year-old man was shot early Saturday. ” First responders found the man bleeding from a gunshot wound to the neck inside the Frederick Douglass Houses on Amsterdam Ave. near W. 101st St. about 10 p.m, the NYPD said.” No description of a suspect had been released.
Damn, I hope someone is looking after McSherry’s dog (mentioned in one of the articles). Sounds like she’s alone in the world.
My condolences to Jean Francois wife, family and friends. I love this bakery and commiserated with his wife when the health dept. shut them down for a few flies. Lovely husband and wife. Good, hard working people. I am so saddened by this news.
Oh my goodness. That 19-year-old “would-be jumper” is someone’s son, and maybe someones father or brother or uncle, and no doubt someone’s friend. In the world to come, there is a special place for the brave and loving man who saved him.
My condolences too to Jean Francois’ family. A good man and a fine shop. He will be missed.
‘3Ms’ “was on the prestigious Hofstra Law School trial team and was quoted in a national newspaper as an expert on the law.
Well that should come in handy.
Good career prep.
Clever, in fact.
Jean Francois was such a vibrant part of the neighborhood, and really did make the best “chocolatines” on the Upper West Side. He will be missed by many.
Wasn’t it an attempted robbery at the 79th St. Chase? Or did she actually get away with some cash?
So sad to hear about Jean Francois. A very talented chef and lovely man.
Thank God for that wonderful doormen who save that man’s life.
Thank “that wonderful doormen who save that man’s life” directly.
Forty-five is so very young to die of a heart condition. Wonder if M. Gatorze knew he had a cardiac condition and or was under medical care.
So many who emigrate to New York from Europe are shocked at our healthcare costs (insurance, doctor visits, etc…) for what you get; in particular those from say France that have an excellent national health scheme that is very affordable.
Running a small business isn’t easy nor cheap in New York City, and many owners often are tempted to cut back in other areas to pour money into the venture.
C’est avec grande tristesse que nous avons appris le décès de M.Gatorze.
Nous partageons votre peine et vous faisons part de nos sincères condoléances.
