Brooklyn Industries at 99th and Broadway closed its doors quite suddenly this week after five years in the neighborhood.
“I stopped by this Brooklyn Industries location at 99th and Broadway to check out their sale that was advertised earlier today and found the employees in the middle of packing up,” wrote Meg, who sent in the photo above. “Sad to see they have closed up shop. So bummed to lose this cute retailer in the neighborhood.”
The chain also closed its Union Square location recently.

A trifecta of Brooklyn Industries, Alamo Drafthouse, and Urban Outfitters would’ve defined this area of Broadway. Guess that’s all gone now.
Has the uptown Urban Outfitters closed as well? It was still there a few weeks ago!
This is highly upsetting. Wait, what the heck is Brooklyn Industries?
A clothes shop that had “Brooklyn” written on everything that no one shopped at.
Have a good winter coat from there – doesn’t say Brooklyn. (well maybe its engraved in the buttons).
They have 14 locations and the majority of their merchandise does not have Brooklyn written on it.
How is that any different from every single person on the UWS who wears the North Face unform?
I’ve even seen a few *married* people wearing that uniform.
I for one LOVED this store. Great employees and terrific clothing options at reasonable prices. Sad to see it go, especially now that this block will officially become one of the dankiest stretches of Broadway in the city. I feel sorry for the liquor store next door which I am sure is sad to see the last reputable business on this block go. Goodness gracious that 24 market next door is shady beyond shady.
Agreed there are some strange folks in the Bodega but I Love the ” Shady” aspect of the 24 hr market next door to Brooklyn Industries . Reminds me of the old New York. I can still buy ” Loosey” cigarettes in there !!
I agree isabelle- this may now be the creepiest block on Broadway. I talked to the owner of Brooklyn Industries two years ago– before the Starbucks and the ramen shop and the other new shops on this little strip. He said he was finding it impossible to run a business with the unsavory folks who hang around that bodega right next door. Who would rent that space now?
Since it has been “the ramen shop and the other new shops on this little strip” that have moved in, I anticipate more of the same.
My preference is for these shops over the chain mall stores.
And you don’t consider a retail establishment that has 14 plus other locations is a “chain mall store”.

The problem for that bock is the SRO, Huntersmoon Hall, which is sketchy beyond belief. Not sure why a retailer like Brooklyn Industries would even consider opening on that block in the first place.
The Upper West Side above 96th street is known for being shady beyond shady. There are pockets of less affluent areas around the neighborhood just like everywhere else.
I’m guessing that I won’t be seeing you around the neighborhood then?
The “undesirables” have the upper hand on Broadway these days, lots of yuppies crying over their market rate checks. I love it.
Yuppies were here on the UWS in the 1980s. They were single and lived in small apartments. They left when the market crashed. The newer residents that you speak of are not Yuppies. They are wealthy families. Yes some of them are the children of the rich and living off of a trust fund, and some are even empty nesters. You also have religious Jews reclaiming the UWS. But “yuppies”? Nah! They used to wear a lot of tweed and blazers.

Rumor is that a new clothes company called Trust Fund industries will be opening at this location.

This store was supposed to close a year ago; they had signs up indicating they were closing. I was surprised to see them stay open a full year after that. This closing doesn’t surprise me because of that.

Wow, just when you start to like a store in NYC, it closes. I liked BI and was just there a few weeks ago. Don’t get too attached to any establishment in this town!
