The statue in Straus Park at 106th and Broadway was draped in patriotic colors on Friday in anticipation of Independence Day. Thanks to Paul Arents for the photo. Check out our calendar for some local July 4 events.

Best wishes to all the WSR readers for a safe and happy holiday wkend. It was nice to see some mounted police patrolling the neighborhood this morning. Id like to hear that “clip clop” more often!
Keep those horses out of the neighborhood! When they are around it is like Central Park South where you have to dodge the horse droppings and the dropping stained streets and crosswalks. Horses do not belong in the middle of a city like ours.
Hey, Ebeneezer, cheer up! And, for the record, I think CPS is also a lovely place to be. I’ll meet ya at Marea for drinks 🙂
Happy 4th!
this statue is one of two Titanic memorials in NYC… and has an interesting historical story behind it.

Thank you for the link Bruce.
you’re welcome.
We are blessed with incredible historic statues and monuments all over the UWS… including along Riverside Drive. i love reading the plaques.
Equally fascinating is the biography of the statue’s model, Audrey Munson!

Our story covers all that and much more, as linked above and here: https://www.westsiderag.com/2011/12/16/upper-west-side-history-the-rise-and-tragic-fall-of-the-model-who-broke-the-rules
