SOMEONE SMASHED THIS TEACHER’S CAR AND DASHED; WHODUNIT?

smash and dash

A teacher was visiting a friend on Saturday night and parked her car on 81st street. When she returned, the car was severely dented, and the perpetrator had clearly made no attempt to contact her or leave a note. Here’s the flyer she’s been posting:

“On Saturday, February 21st between 6:30pm and midnight someone hit my car and drove off without leaving a note. It was parked near the fire hydrant on the northwest corner of 81st Street between Amsterdam and Columbus (near the St. James Café).

I am a public school teacher in New York City. I use my car to get to my school by 6a.m. every morning and then I use it to drive my after-school students home because there is no school bus for them.

If you have any information on what happened to my car (perhaps you have a surveillance camera), please call me at 914 632 5416.”

This is nothing new. People have been vandalizing cars for a while on the UWS but our police officers can’t be bothered. They have more important things to do, like block a fire hydrant while both officers text or perhaps sleeping on 106th and Riverside. Anything that involves them coming out of the car is a no-can-do. For gods sake they slap tickets from their patrol cars.

Are you serious? Does that look like vandalism to you? Looks like another driver had an “acci-dent” and chose to drive off. Typical!

Just re-read what you wrote “genius”
If my baseballl bat accidently takes off some mirror and makes a few dents is that also an accident? The weapon of choice was different but the outcome still the same. The individuals car was damaged and the A-Hole left.

Hi Conni, Were you able to track down the person who did it? A lot of buildings have security cameras, were they of any help?

It was parked in front of the El Dorado but since I haven’t had to move it I have no idea when it happened. It was the front bumper so I it might have been a plow or someone trying to park who had no clue. I have been seeing a lot of people who don’t know how to parallel park.

Sad part is that it probably was the crosstown bus that did it! That corner is a bad spot for parked sorry to hear that it was damaged. The buildings around there I believe have video survailance so they should just contact the management companies to see if they can help!

The roads seem to be littered with awful, inconsiderate drivers these days. With snow on the group, absolute caution has to be taken, arriving late be damned

When happened to my car a number of years ago a neighbor saw a snowplow clip my car as it came around the corner of 82nd and Riverside.

I’m no detective , , , but if I’m correct, the hydrant you referenced is the one in front of Bldg. Number 175. My best hunch is that an M79 Bus clipped your rear side panel as they made the turn from Amsterdam to West 81 Street. It was snowing that evening (Saturday 2-23). Rookie bus drivers tend to get the crappy shifts (late evening and over night). If I had to bet, it was some inexperienced bus driver who got you. That particular turn has always been difficult to navigate, especially with the ‘extended’ buses. Its a long stretch, but stakeout the corner this coming Saturday between 6:30 & 9 pm and look for any bus that would have red paint on their bumper. There are only 4, maybe 6, buses on that route during off-peak hours.

    Good luck!

Last Friday I parked, legally, on WEA and 74th street.
Coming back to the car, three hours later, I discovered that the car parked airhead of me, while backing to clear its space, went over the ice bank and totaled the front end of my car.
There was no note left, and the doorman to the building had no recollection of the damage done.
I have no problem with accidents happening where no lives are lost or hurt, but the fact that the other driver just left is a sign of our times.

Last night (between 5:30 pm on 2/24 and 7:15 am today, 2/25) someone broke out one of my car’s windows and rummaged through every hidden compartment of my car, including opening the trunk from the inside by pulling down the back seats and going through items in my trunk. Several items, including important personal papers as well as items of monetary value, were stolen from my car in addition to the broken window. I filed a police report, but no one had previously reported the act…please if you have any information please reply to this thread. It was parked on west 105th between Broadway and West End.
