Nora Ephron, the writer and filmmaker who died last month, was an Upper West Sider. She was born here, lived much of her life here, and made the neighborhood the setting for some of her most acclaimed films. The JCC on 76th and Amsterdam is honoring Ephron next Tuesday (July 31) by showing a double feature of her work on the roof. Tickets to each movie are $5, and you can buy a ticket to both for $7.

6:30 p.m.
Heartburn: “Meryl Streep and Jack Nicholson star this adaptation of Ephron’s semi-autobiographical novel. When Rachel meets Mark they quickly fall in love and she uproots from New York’s Upper West Side to Washington DC. But, while Rachel is pregnant with their first child, their marriage begins to dissolve.”

8:30 p.m.
When Harry Met Sally:
“Harry (Billy Crystal) and Sally (Meg Ryan) are on-again off-again friends for fourteen years until they finally realize just how much they love each other in this classic romantic comedy. The pair spend a lot of time trying to figure out how their friendship can survive in spite of Harry’s staunch belief that people of the opposite sex simply can’t be just friends.”

Reserve tickets here, and read all about Ephron’s life on the Upper West Side here.

Our primary goal is to create a safe and respectful space where a broad spectrum of voices can be heard. We welcome diverse viewpoints and encourage readers to engage critically with one another’s ideas, but never at the expense of civility. Disagreement is expected—even encouraged—but it must be expressed with care and consideration. Comments that take cheap shots, escalate conflict, or veer into ideological warfare detract from the constructive spirit we aim to cultivate.
