September 4th through 7th

Take the long weekend to check out museum shows that are closing soon or just opening:

  • Self-Made: A Century of Inventing Artists, at the American Folk Art Museum (through Sept. 13th)
  • Fade, at Studio Museum Harlem (through Sept. 6th)
  • Esperanza Cortés: Embroidered Allegories, at the Hispanic Society and Museum (opened on September 3rd)

The Metropolitan Opera Summer HD Festival:  Josie Robertson Plaza at Lincoln Center; through Monday, September 7th; free (first-come, first-served; no advance tickets or reservations)

The Met’s 17th Summer HD Festival features free screenings of opera performances that were originally transmitted live from the Metropolitan Opera House to movie theaters around the world. About 2,500 seats will be set up in front of the opera house each night. The schedule is as follows;

  • Friday, September 14th: Bellini’s “I Puritani” at 7:30 p.m.
  • Saturday, September 5th: Tchaikovsky’s “Eugene Onegin” at 8 p.m.
  • Sunday, September 6th: Gabriela Lena Frank’s “El Último Sueño de Frida y Diego” at 8 p.m.
  • Monday, September 7th: Puccini’s “La Bohème” at 8 p.m.

West Side County Fair: Sunday, September 6th at Pier I in Riverside Park South near West 70th Street from 1 to 6 p.m.; free entry with optional purchases available on site

There’ll be live music all day at this fair organized by Riverside Park Conservancy, plus performers, carnival entertainment, local vendors, rides and games for kids. NYC Councilmember Gale Brewer will be on hand.

Go to the U.S. Open

Check out the Rag’s 2026 UWS Guide to the U.S. Open, and take this weekend to visit, or at least watch it on TV. In the later stages of the tournament, you can get a $30 grounds pass and while that won’t get you access to the big stage at Arthur Ashe Stadium, you can see great doubles action, juniors tennis and some of the elite wheelchair athletes of the sport. It’s also free to enter next Thursday, September 10th.

Our primary goal is to create a safe and respectful space where a broad spectrum of voices can be heard. We welcome diverse viewpoints and encourage readers to engage critically with one another’s ideas, but never at the expense of civility. Disagreement is expected—even encouraged—but it must be expressed with care and consideration. Comments that take cheap shots, escalate conflict, or veer into ideological warfare detract from the constructive spirit we aim to cultivate.
