By West Side Rag
Reader support is an important part of how we fund West Side Rag, so that we can continue to pursue independent, hyper-local stories that impact, inform, and entertain the people who live and work on and visit the Upper West Side.
This is our 15th year as a newsroom, and we are already planning how we can best serve and report on the Upper West Side for the next 15 years to come. And future generations beyond that. As we’ve previously mentioned, we’re also working through the application process to become a nonprofit.
With that goal of financial sustainability in mind, we are making these reader contribution asks a bit more frequently.
When you contribute to West Side Rag, you’re helping pay for our team of reporters, writers, and editors to cover the stories and craft the essays and features that matter in the neighborhood. Our website is free to access. Our work is free to read. And it will continue to be so, even though it is not free to produce.

If West Side Rag is how you start your day and part of how you stay connected to the Upper West Side, please consider supporting us. And, if you’re able, making a monthly or annual commitment, which can have even more of an impact, that would be greatly appreciated.

As soon as you file as a nonprofit I will be delighted to donate. But why aren’t you a nonprofit on the NPR model?
Have you considered Patreon? That could possibly stimulate more donations.
too much censoring of comments
I’d be more open to supporting WSR if there was more transparency around authorship for certain articles and comment approvals, especially when they follow the policies but disagree with certain viewpoints.
I’m appalled by the incredible amount of whining about comment policy for an incredible free resource like the WSR. Yeah some of my comments are (unjustly!) blocked, get over it people.
WSR team, I suggest some sort of Substack-style system where only members have commenting privileges, I would pay handsomely!
