The Riverside Memorial Chapel has served the Upper West Side since 1927 from its building at the corner of West 76th Street and Amsterdam Avenue.
On Tuesday, the Jewish funeral provider and chapel celebrated its 100th anniversary within the landmarked building at 180 West 76th Street and also marked the completion of an $18 million restoration project.
“For more than a century, Riverside has been entrusted with helping families navigate some of the most meaningful moments of their lives,” said Charles S. Salomon, President of Riverside Memorial Chapel, in a news release. “This restoration ensures we can continue that provision with the same dignity, compassion, and respect for tradition, while creating a space that reflects how families gather, remember, and support one another.”
The restoration of the chapel aimed to preserve the integrity of the historic building while also updating the property for more modern use.
“The project carefully maintains the building’s defining architectural elements, including its Gothic chapel and other historic design features, while introducing enhancements to gathering and communal spaces that better support how families come together today,” according to a description of the renovations provided by the chapel.
