A man has been sentenced to more than a decade in prison for an attempted rape in Central Park in 2024, Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg announced on Wednesday.
Jermaine Longmire, 45, was sentenced to 13 years in state prison, with 15 years of post-release supervision for attempting to rape a woman in Central Park on June 24, 2024.
On the day, a 21-year-old woman was sunbathing in the Great Hills section of Central Park near West Drive and West 104th Street, when Longmire snuck up to her and exposed himself, according to the DA’s office. The woman then attempted to run away, but Longmire tackled her from behind and pinned her down, the DA added.
The survivor was able to fight him off, and Longmire fled on West Drive, according to the DA.
Longmire was able to initially escape the scene, but was actually arrested for a different forcible touching pattern a few days later and while in custody, he was linked by DNA evidence to the Central Park attempted rape, CBS reported at the time.
Longmire had eight previous arrests in New York City, the majority of them related to sex-abuse crimes, CBS added.
“Jermaine Longmire is facing significant time in state prison for attempting to rape a woman who was trying to enjoy her day off in Central Park. New Yorkers and visitors alike deserve to feel safe in Manhattan’s parks,” Bragg said in a news release. “I want to thank the survivor for bravely testifying in this trial. I hope this sentencing can offer a sense of closure as she continues to heal from this traumatic assault.”

Someone with EIGHT sex crimes walking the streets. Takes a TENth crime to put him in jail for 13 years.
1 year 4 months for changing the life of each victim – forever.
At least we know what the going rate is.
Vote better next time.
Could have voted for Timmins.
His 13 years is for a single victim. No idea if he was convicted in any of the other arrests, but if he was, he would have been sentenced separately for any of those. You do understand that that is how our justice system works, right?
That is condescending and utterly lacking in real comprehension. Yay, Peter.
It doesn’t work.
Almost two years from arrest to conviction. Sounds right
I am frustrated that it took eight prior arrests to get to this point but I appreciate that it finally happened. A longer time in jail would be preferred but it is better than a slap on the wrist.
Curious as to what the prior eight crimes were and what the sentences were for each of those?
Arrest does not imply conviction
Yes, I am sure he was innocent all 8 times.
This is good. I feel like one week after he gets out he’ll do it again. But good job.
Not long enough. Should be 50 years.
More like life term. He is useless to society.
So he should be released at 95? At that age he would likely pose no menace to society, but do you feel it would be sufficient punishment?
Also, if what in practical terms amounts to a life sentence fits Mr. Longmire’s crimes, how many years do mass murderers deserve — any thoughts?
Ask the women he sexually assaulted and the woman he attempted to rape with his penis exposed if his sentence is long enough. She has life imprisonment in her mind of him attempting to rape her and she will never be the same again.
He will be out on parole in 4 years.
Happy now ?
He deserves life in prison as do mass murderers.
The U.S. Constitution (which still includes the Eighth Amendment) is such a musty ol’ document, isn’t it? And sentencing proportionality such a quaint concept!
Anyhow, I gather from your comment you favor a life sentence for djt. Perhaps our views aren’t so far apart, after all, though I might add hard labor, no parole, and restitution.
His victims all have to live with his actions against them for the rest of THEIR lives. Sexual assault (or any assault, for that matter) is not something one just “gets past.”
13 years means he will be out in 3-4 years with good behavior
Ditto what others have said. It’s good that Longmire was sentenced, but it’s very bad that he was at large to commit all those prior crimes … assuming his prior arrests were for crimes.
Please stop releasing repeat offenders. It appears the majority of crimes are committed by repeat offenders or those released on bond. This is insane. We have to stop defending the rights of criminals over the general public.
good.
Appallingly low sentence.
EIGHT previous arrests? And he was FREE?
There’s a North Woods section of the park, but no Great “Hills”. It’s Great Hill. I recognize the DA might have said that, but I’ve never heard “Great Hills” and can’t find any Parks-authored use of that name.
