November 14th through 16th
Studio Museum in Harlem Community Day: Saturday, November 15th from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m.; 144 West 125th Street, between Malcolm X and Adam Clayton Powell Jr. boulevards; admission prices offered as a suggestion (starting at $9), with free entry on Sundays.
The public reopening of the storied Studio Museum in Harlem will be marked by a celebratory Community Day this Saturday, when everyone from the museum’s surrounding communities, including the UWS, will be welcomed into the new 82,000-square-foot, $160 million building, which was designed by Adjaye Associates. There will be performances, games, giveaways, art-making workshops, a cocoa bar, a sound bath, a mocktail hour and a DJ, among other activities. The New York Times described the museum’s new home as a “remarkable accomplishment and an uplifting, uncompromising addition to the city’s civic landscape.”
College Basketball at Columbia: Saturday, November 15th at 7 p.m.; Schiller Court at Levien Gymnasium, 3030 Broadway at West 120th Street; tickets start at $10.
The reigning Ivy League Women’s Basketball Champions return home Saturday night after two weeks on the road, to play their season’s home opener against the University of Richmond Spiders. Junior guard Riley Weiss was Ivy League Player of the Week last week, as she led the Lions to a blazing 2-0 road start. The first 250 fans will get a free lookbook to commemorate last year’s championship! Doors open at 6 p.m.
College Football at Columbia: Saturday, November 15th at noon; Wien Stadium at 533 West 218th Street; tickets start at $13.
It’s the last home game of the season for the Lions football team. They’ll honor their seniors in a pregame ceremony before facing Brown. The Lions (1-7, 0-5) lost last weekend to Harvard, and could use the support as they hope to close out 2025 strong uptown.
See a Movie
I’m buying advance tickets to see “Wicked For Good,” the sequel to “Wicked” (2024), which doesn’t come out till next week. But what I’ll see this weekend is “Bugonia,” Yorgos Lanthimos’s latest. The New York Times describes it as “kind of about aliens.” I’m going into my neighborhood multiplex not knowing much about the film, which is the way I often like to go into movies. It stars Jesse Plemons and Emma Stone.
Local non-profit movie house New Plaza Cinema has screenings and Q&As that sound great to me. I’ve been wanting to see “Elie Weisel: Soul of Fire,” the new documentary about the inner life of the titular Holocaust survivor and author of “Night.” On Sunday it’s playing at 4:35 p.m., with a chance to chat with one of the producers afterwards. Richard Linklater’s “Blue Moon”– starring Ethan Hawke as Broadway tunesmith Lorenz Hart – is being offered on Friday and Saturday, as is “SHTTL,” a recreation of Eastern European shtetl life before it was destroyed. Lead “SHTTL” actor Moshe Lobel will discuss the film after both screenings.
