Monday Bulletin: Parents Seek to Transfer Children Out of NYC Private Schools After Mamdani Victory; H&H Bagels Opens Florida Location — with NYC Water; Hedge Fund Manager (and Cuomo Supporter) Bill Ackman Offers Support to Mayor Elect; Vigil Held in Columbus Circle

Today is Monday, November 10th, 2025

Today’s forecast calls for a mix of sun and clouds, with a high in the mid-50s. Tomorrow will be chillier, with an expected high of only 43, but the mercury should climb back into the 50s for the rest of the week. No rain expected till Sunday.

On this date in 1969, Sesame Street premiered on the National Educational Television network, the precursor to PBS. The show was the first children’s program to use educational goals and a curriculum to shape its content. In the 56 years since its premiere, it has won over 200 Emmy Awards — more than any other children’s program — and is one of the longest-running television shows in the world. In 2018, it was estimated that 86 million Americans had grown up watching it.

News Roundup

Minutes after Zohran Mamdani was elected mayor, parents whose children attend prestigious private schools in the city began actively trying to transfer them to private schools outside of the city, according to the New York Post. The publication interviewed school placement consultant Christopher Rim, who said that one day after the election, 23 parents already had asked for his help in getting their children into schools elsewhere, including several parents whose children attend Trinity School on West 91st Street.

“Within the first 30 minutes of AP announcing Mamdani’s victory, I got three messages from families looking to move,” said Rim, founder and CEO of Command Education.

Many of those planning to transfer their children to schools out of the city are Jewish and are concerned that Mamdani’s election will lead to an increase in antisemitism, according to Rim. “They’re saying they’re worried about safety in their everyday life,” Rim said. “I don’t even think it’s a financial thing. I don’t think it’s the taxes or how much more money they would have to pay to live here.”

He said that the students involved range from third graders on up through high school and currently attend schools such as Riverdale, Horace Mann, Ramaz, and Avenues, as well as Trinity.

Many are looking to transfer their children to schools on the east coast of Florida, but Greenwich, Conn., and Saddle River, N.J., also are of interest, Rim told the Post.

He said he also spoke with parents who took NYU and Columbia off their child’s college application list “because they don’t want their kid to live in New York City” while Mamdani is mayor.

“These are families who have been thinking of leaving, been wanting to leave,” Rim said. “This is just the final thing that pushed them to New Jersey, Connecticut, Florida, or even further.”

Families who do flee to Florida in the wake of the mayoral election won’t have to travel back to New York in order to get a taste of home: H&H Bagels recently opened its first location in Tampa, Fla.

The famed shop was founded on the UWS in 1972 but became known far beyond the city thanks to appearances on television shows such as Seinfeld, Sex & the City, and The Office. H&H has been expanding geographically in recent years: In addition to seven shops in the city, it has one in California and one in Tennessee. The Tampa location is the third H&H location in Florida, and the only one on the state’s west coast, but the company’s website lists six other Florida locations as “coming soon.”

In honor of the opening of the Tampa shop, Neighborhood News Online, a local site covering neighborhoods in suburban Tampa Bay, sent reporter Gary Nager — a former New Yorker — to try the bagels.

Nager wrote that in the past, he had lived a few blocks from H&H’s Second Avenue location, and that “[t]he company’s kettle-boiled-then-baked bagels in New York were as good as any I had ever had,” so he was eager to see how the Tampa H&H bagels compared.

As it turned out, they measured up beautifully — and in an interview, H&H  CEO Jay Rushkin, explained why: “The bagels are made with that famous New York water, boiled, frozen and shipped here.”

Nager placed an order to try one for himself: “a toasted, scooped-out sesame bagel with cream cheese, Nova Scotia salmon and I was surprised and thrilled to be able to add a shmear of real whitefish salad, plus a slice of tomato.”

His verdict? “Just yum!”

Mayor-elect Zohran Mamdani.

In other election-related news, billionaire hedge-fund manager (and UWSer) Bill Ackman — who initially supported Mayor Eric Adams’ campaign for re-election, and later announced his support for Andrew Cuomo  — made news on election night when he posted on X to congratulate the new mayor.

“@ZohranKMamdani, congrats on the win,” wrote Ackman, founder and chief executive of Pershing Square Capital Management.  “Now you have a big responsibility. If I can help NYC, just let me know what I can do.”

During an appearance on Good Morning America the day after the election, Mamdani was asked about Ackman’s offer to help. “I appreciated his words,” the mayor-elect responded. “I think what I find is that there is a needed commitment from leaders of the city to speak and work with anyone who is committed to lowering the cost of living in the city — and that’s something that I will fulfill.”

Hundreds of people gathered in Columbus Circle last week in a candlelight vigil to honor the memory of Omer Neutra, the Long Island native who served in the Israeli army and was killed in the October 7th, 2023, terror attack by Hamas. As part of the recent ceasefire agreement, Neutra’s remains were returned to Israel by Hamas after 758 days.

Neutra, a tank platoon commander, was raised in Plainview, in Nassau County. He died one week before his 22nd birthday.

“After more than two years of anguish and uncertainty, our beloved son Captain Omer Neutra has finally been returned to us,” said his mother, Orna Neutra, speaking from Israel. Neutra was buried in Tel Aviv on Friday.

When the Berlin wall came down there wasn’t too many flocking to the east side. You folks did a stupid thing in NYC. All because of TDS and a lack of education in the younger people, with a sprinkling of let’s teach our kids to be perpetual victims that need free stuff to survive because they studied useless subjects at college.

Several U.S. cities have free public transportation, though some offer it only on certain routes, for specific groups, or through pilot programs. Kansas City, Missouri, was the first large city to implement a systemwide zero-fare policy for its buses. Other examples include Tucson, Arizona; Albany, New York; Birmingham, Alabama; Worcester, Massachusetts; and Las Cruces, New Mexico. Some cities, like San Francisco and Boston, are testing fare-free programs on specific routes or for certain demographics like seniors and youth.

He actually didn’t win “big” by NYC standards. The City is 3:1 Democratic and the usual election is 65 – 35 or more.

As to your first comment, seriously? They should scour the news for an offset to a story that (because Trinity School) directly reflects on the Upper West Side?

(For what it’s worth, I think the story is garbage. People will react, explore options, and overwhelmingly they’ll stay. About once every six months the Post reports that 25 – 40% of NYC is about to leave but the fact is that the City’s population is growing, as are our tax revenues)

The Post, and Fox, live to gin up the right and keep them convinced that cities are dangerous hellholes. I’ve had folk from Dallas, where the murder rate is 3X ours, ask if I feel safe, with genuine concern for fragile me.
Meanwhile, on any given day in Texas and Florida each? More die on the roads than are killed in our subways in a year. Each.

AND? Fox news signed a 20 year renewal of its lease in NYC while Murdoch bought a 30 million dollar condo. While ginning up the readers/watcher into thinking that the National Guard is needed to make places like this safe.

I understand that you are quoting a story in the Tampa-based Neighborhood News Online, but it is still disquieting to read faulty or misleading information about H&H Bagels in WSR! Yes, the famed shop was founded on the Upper West Side in 1972 (at Broadway and 80th), but it became widely known for its phenomenal bagels long before it was featured in a 1997 Seinfeld episode! More to the point, one of the two original H&H founders opened H&H Midtown Bagels East on the Upper East Side in 1974; however, when H&H went bankrupt (for the first time) in 1979, a new group took over ownership of the UES H&H location, resulting in a split with the owners of the original and one true UWS location. The original W. 80th location closed in January 2012, which means that ever since that time the entity operating the H&H name is different than the original establishment. Why does this matter? Because the bagels the current H&H Bagels make are nowhere near as good! I live close enough to the UWS location (Columbus between 85th and 86th) that opened in 2016 and was remodeled in 2022 to go there every day if I wanted to. Alas, after several tries both before and after the remodel I never go there. The H&H that is alive today and expanding to other parts of the country just isn’t very good.

The so-called H&H on Columbus is one of the least friendly shops in the neighborhood. They’re really in the business of selling sandwiches and resent when you just want to buy bagels. Which I no longer do. The bagels at the bustling Space Market next door come from who-knows-where, but they’re better than the H&H product.

For many years “Sesame Street” was taped at the Reeves Teletape studios at Broadway and 81st Street in the building where Staples is now located. Earlier in the late 1950s it was a CBS color studio which originated the highly-viewed broadcast of “Cinderella” starring Julie Andrews in 1957.

I can understand the fear of antisemitism on the part of some parents but surrendering by flight is not the answer. I am surprised that the endorsement of a Democrat Socialist by the United Federation of Teachers has not spurred a parental response in the public school system. One has to wonder what is being ingrained into the children by these educators.

That’s a product of political campaign rhetoric, negative campaigning, scare mongering, slanted journalism, outright dishonesty and abject ignorance among too many average Americans. Socialism is control of the means of production. Zohran Mamdani, Bernie Sanders and AOC are not socialists! “Democratic Socialist” is a made up term to draw attention to the plight of the working class, as well as the enormous economic inequality that has ballooned in our nation during late-stage capitalism.

I’m a Jewish parent with a child in private school who strongly opposed Mamdani, though primarily due to his lack of experience and unrealistic plans. That being said, I don’t think the world is going to end because he is mayor. I think that he handled Jewish-related issues very poorly but I don’t think that in his heart he is anti-Semitic and that he will not tolerate egregiously bad behavior towards Jews.

Please don’t quote ridiculous, sensationalistic NY Post articles – it is beneath WSR. If people are truly dumb enough to be moving immediately because he is mayor, they don’t need to be further glorified by being mentioned here. Good riddance to them.

“Minutes after Zohran Mamdani was elected mayor, parents whose children attend prestigious private schools in the city began actively trying to transfer them to private schools outside of the city, according to the New York Post …”

A Murdoch-owned publication making up stuff about the victory of a Democrat[ic socialiast]? Say it isn’t so!

Re people moving their children out of NYC private schools, apparently, and very sadly, at least SOME of the racism and fear-mongering about Mamdani has worked.

But Mamdani didn’t run for Congress, he ran for mayor. So his personal views on Israel and Israeli politics are irrelevant, as long as he maintains – as he has consistently – his vow to protect NYC Jews and to fight anti-Semitism at every turn. And I firmly believe he will do so.

Sadly, Islamophobes cannot imagine a Muslim caring about and protecting Jewish people. But the two are not mutually exclusive.

It’s feeling to me like that there are people using “fear of anti-semitism” as a way of expressing their bigotry toward Muslims. New York does not need tribalism; where has that ever worked except to breed conflict.

I hope all these wealthy private school parents leave and take their tax revenue with them.

Let’s see Mamdani pay for all his proposed nonsense when the wealthy leave.

And I have many friends who are seriously considering leaving the city.

Yes, free child care for every New Yorker aged 6 weeks to 5 years is nonsense! How could any wealthy New Yorker stand for that! Can you imagine such a thing? /s

As a Jew, I am tired of the ignorance, lack of humanity and prejudice of my fellow Jews. Mamdani is not anti-semitic; it is the Jews threatened by him who are anti-Palestinian. Everyone has a right to their beliefs about Israel; however, having taught in NYC private schools for over 30 years, I believe that this exodus has more to do with pocketbook fears than religious ones.

So Jews who feel threatened by Mamdani are anti-Palestinian?
Is logic simply out of vogue?

There’s very understandable logic to that if you follow that the charges of antisemitism against Mamdani flow directly from his opposition to Israel as it’s currently constructed vis a vis the Palestinian people. I personally do not agree with all of Mamdani’s views on the Middle East, but I see clearly how so many supporters of Israel view the conflict as a zero sum game and translate their revulsion of Hamas (which it should go without saying is entirely justified) into overt prejudice against Palestinians. Mamdani has also been deeply critical of Benjamin Netanyahu, and it is extremely difficult to support or defend Netanyahu’s policies without dehumanizing Palestinians.

The Riverdale Country School is located smack-dab in the middle of Fieldston, the richest neighborhood in the Bronx, where the various mansions are primarily owned by Jews. Horace Mann isn’t far from it, nor are the Hebrew schools called SARS. If the families of students there are skipping town, it may be because they are mucho rich and balk at paying extra Mamdani taxes, because their kids are perfectly safe in Riverdale.

I’m NOT a fan of H&H Bagels but the taste and quality of all bread products are dependent on the flavor and quality of the water used in production. An H&H bagel made in Florida will not be any better than any other bread product in Florida! This article really made me laugh, reading about H&H locations popping up around the country… Bagels made west of the Mississippi River??? Made In LA??? No Thank You!!!! A GREAT bagel only comes from the Tri-State Area!!!!!

I recall going to a pizza place in Philly that claimed they brought in the water used in the pizza from NYC as that made their pizza better. I was very doubtful but give them points for their effort…

H&H bagels aren’t anything close to the original, so what does it matter that some one who owns the name does in Florida?

We need to get a recall option established in NY. After the George Santos fiasco it should’ve been on the ballot this year.

1) Bill Ackman sounds like a patronizing, oversolicitous jerk with an unsubtle agenda. Don’t fall for it, Zohran! 2) Wealthy mostly-Jewish, parents all “suddenly” planning to move their private school students away, “for their safety”? Again, a very unsubtle agenda, by what may be a coalition, giving marching orders to their bloc.

I’m curious why parents waited until after the election to attempt to transfer their kids. The teacher’s union backed him months ago, that’s when we got our kids out.

Not just NYers taking NYC schools off college list — we are out of state and my senior and friends have all decided to take NYC schools off list. Not Jewish but parents and kids agree not worth the risk in safety . RIP NYC.

I’m very happy with the win of Mamdani. I’m Jewish and in my early 60s’. I don’t buy in to the racism or fears of anti-semitism. I think some of his ideas are excellent and like his positive energy. And most particularly, his competition was lacking. Sliwa’s a joke and Cuomo just didn’t get that New Yorkers are not interested in him any more.

I agree. Jewish and in my late 60s, not Zionist at all. I think the anti-semitism is exaggerated, and I think there’s just as much Islamophobia. I like Mamdani’s positive energy. Not quite so sure about some of his ideas – I think subsidies (child care, buses, rent-stabilized housing) should be means tested, not available to all. Free CUNY tuition, too – others have proposed that.

But we really need the new energy in politics, and younger people. Okay, I am a bit nervous about his inexperience – I hope he has the sense to surround himself with really experienced people. But I think it’s a good thing for the old white guys to move on (fortunately NY electeds aren’t as white and male as federal elected are) and I’m looking forward to what comes next.

Mamdani comes across as an articulate and intelligent person. The GOP is demonizing him and he’s not even in office. People are just tired of the status quo of politics where nothing ever gets done and those that are of modest means are marginalized more and more! This bigotry has got to end. Did all of the Muslims flee NYC when Bloomberg was Mayor? Don’t make Mamdani out to be the Boogeyman. Give him a chance. If he’s a total disaster then vote accordingly and remove him from office! That’s how it’s supposed to work in a democracy. VOTE!!!

It’s hard to call Rikki Scott of the NYPost a reporter, even though the Post labels her as such. Is Michael Goodwin really a reporter?

Also pretty hard to imagine that wealthy Trinity parents (of any background) have never heard boarding schools like Andover, St. Paul’s, Choate, or even the “hippy” Putney.

The post article looks like marketing for a secondary school consultant.

I see, irony, that that Collegiate School is missing from the concern “articles'” list.

Given that the upper west side went to Mamdani and the vast majority of Jewish New Yorkers voted for Mamdani. It’s kind of pandering to paranoia and his homophobia spend the space highlighting those parents here. Not to mention that going to Florida, one of the most bigoted states right now, is very telling.

Forgive me if I’m skeptical about that private school story. Christopher Rim is a very young and very talented self-promoter – a quick Google search finds him being quoted in the past by Fortune (“This millennial was rejected from 200 jobs—now he makes millions charging wealthy families six-figures to get their kids into the Ivy Leagues”), New York magazine (“Inventing the Perfect College Applicant”), Bloomberg (“Ultra-Rich Buy Ultra-Luxury Counseling to Get Kids Into Harvard”), the Bergen Record, Business Insider, several U.K. papers, and at least two earlier stories in the New York Post (“Ivy League slashes price of ‘donor door’ from $20M to $2M after antisemitism storm,” “Beating the odds: How students stand out and get into the Ivy League”).

Rim, like all of us, knows that the Post wants Mamdani to fail. What better way to get his name in that paper than to say Post readers need to turn to consultants like him right now if they want to beat the (real or imaghinary) rush to suburban schools caused by the allegedly evil and allegedly anti-Semitic new mayor?

I’m not buying it. I’m sure a few parents are panicking, but 23 clients? Maybe, maybe not.
