Scenes From Election Day on the Upper West Side

Election Day officially began in New York City at 6 a.m. Tuesday, when poll sites opened. They will remain open on the Upper West Side and throughout the city until 9 p.m.

Early voting, which ended Monday, set a record for the city, with over 735,000 people casting ballots. But West Side Rag reporters traveling around the neighborhood Tuesday morning still found a steady stream of voters at polling sites on West 76th Street, West 84th Street, West 101st Street, and West 103rd Street.

“We will see if we can actually get these things done, but I want a candidate that wants to try to do good things,” Loie Platz, who voted in the mayoral race for Democrat Zohran Mamdani on Tuesday morning at West 103rd Street, told the Rag.

Other locals coming out of the West 103rd Street polling site said they had cast their votes for Andrew Cuomo.

“It was a tough choice, but I felt a little bit more experience was necessary,” Roz Leibowitz said. “And I have to say that there were some things regarding Jewish New Yorkers that got me a little bit upset. But I know Mamdani is going to win, so I wish him good luck and I hope we all have good luck with him.”

Along with the voters in the neighborhood were elected officials, including Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg at the corner of West 84th Street and Columbus Avenue, who is on the ballot for reelection.

“It is great to be out here interacting with voters on the Upper West Side,” Bragg told the Rag. “Obviously, it is an area of the borough that votes in high numbers, but we’re also throughout the borough engaging with voters everywhere.”

Nearby, the Rag bumped into former U.S. Senator Al Franken coming out of a polling site in the West 70s.

“I voted for Mamdani,” Franken, who moved back to New York City from Minnesota in 2021, told the Rag. “I like him. I hope he’ll be able to make up for his inexperience and put together a good team. He was the first to jump on affordability and the rest of the country kind of followed him. The city needs to get more affordable for people.”

There were teams of volunteers at the corners of the UWS polling sites, including a noticeable uptick in the number of Cuomo supporters handing out literature, compared to the June Democratic primary. There was still a strong Mamdani field team present in the neighborhood on Tuesday, while the Rag did not see any volunteers for Republican nominee Curtis Sliwa.

Though he lost citywide, Cuomo won the Upper West Side by four percentage points in the Democratic primary, with 34 percent of the vote compared to Mamdani’s 30 percent, and Brad Lander’s 25 percent. T

Farther uptown, the Rag also caught up with City Councilmember Shaun Abreu, who is running for reelection in District 7, and State Senator Brad Hoylman-Sigal, who is the Democratic nominee for Manhattan Borough President.

“The interactions regarding my race are very positive,” Abreu said about his Tuesday morning conversations with voters. “This district goes blue in every general election, so nothing really there to worry about, but I think people are excited more broadly about the mayoral race.”

Abreu officially endorsed Mamdani in July.

Hoylman-Sigal also said the response from voters had been “positive.” There is a “sense of understanding this moment is one that could set the direction for this city for the next decade,” he told the Rag. “The consequences are profound and Upper West Siders understand that, no matter what side they’re on in the mayor’s race.”

Hoylman-Sigal also endorsed Mamdani over the summer.

Other Election Day Upper West Side sights included a bake sale outside a West 76th Street polling site, organized by students raising money for the Anderson School. The choices included homemade treats and other baked goods donated by local businesses.

There was also neighborhood political button man Michael Zorek, who was outside the West 84th Street polling site selling his goods. He donates a portion of his profits to local political engagement groups.

Sliwa should have dropped out weeks ago. I like some of his ideas but he’s just splitting the vote pointlessly. If Mamdani wins it will be partly his fault – he’s a real gift to that campaign. This is a very close election.

Sliwa is a major party nominee. He is not responsible for who the Dems nominated.

Maybe Republicans should ditch some of their extremist positions and moderate so they can actually be competitive in major cities and get a real candidate to run instead of Curtis Sliwa. Everyone is always concern trolling Democrats to moderate if they want to win, why don’t Republicans care about even trying to win in NYC? Why don’t they moderate on their extreme views on and run as responsible grown ups. It’s not Democrats fault that New York conservatives and moderates have decided they would rather value ideologically pure over winning and putting their best ideas into practice.
The NY Post and reactionary Facebook groups don’t care about what’s best for the city, they care about clicks. Mamdani winning is the best thing to ever happen to them. If people really think Mamdani is the end of the world, what are they willing to compromise on to actually beat him? Their actions say they would rather complain than govern.

Serving as a spoiler for Cuomo and championing animal rights are the two endearing qualities I recognize in Sliwa.

Al Franken lives on the UWS?! What a gem.

His point on the importance of an experienced team that the mayor appoints is so true and often (intentionally?) ignored by the Mamdani haters

Not to ruin everyone’s day, but Trump endorsing Cuomo was a ruse. Trump and the RNC actually WANT mandami to win, because his Socialist policies will wreck the city, and Mandami’s actions & words will be fodder for Republican ads in ‘26 and ‘28. Move over Gavin Newsome…. mandami will be the Republican punching bag for the next 4 years

This isn’t 4-dimentional or even 3-dimentional chess, its obvious the GOP will use Mamdani as a punching bag, that’s what they do.

I PROUDLY casted my vote for Zohran Mamdani today! What a joy to vote for a candidate who I actually admire and believe in, not just the lesser of two evils, as I have unfortunately been subjected to for years and years by the Democratic establishment.

I hear you, but fact is Cuomo has delivered many Democratic agenda items like gay marriage, minimum wage raise, expanding pre-k.

it’s easy to admire someone who hasn’t done anything and talks about hope. let’s check back in a few years.

I thought all 3 candidates for mayor were horrible. As I voted today and looked over the ballot, I was actually somewhat disheartened. I thought the 3 candidates for mayor were less than ideal, Gale Brewer (whom I have no issue with) ran unopposed, the candidates for DA were lacking, the winners in the Public Advocate, Borough President and Comptroller’s races ran against a bunch of unknowns (or stood no chance of winning) and you got to choose 4 judges — there were only 4 and all were democrats. Is this really the best we can do?

everyone clamoring the Mamdani represents a new face and a breath of fresh air – what about the rest of our local races? I’m sorry, but I am personally getting tired of a bunch of has beens and career politicians that move from one office to another and then back again (to get around term limits) and its not good for democratic races when the same people run unopposed. I am just as tired of people who vote straight down party lines simply because they could never vote for someone on the other side of the ballot. I wish I knew the answer but how do we get better candidates….

I didn’t vote for him but I congratulate Mayor-elect Mamdani on his win and hope for his success. His success means NYC is a success, so why wish for his failure?

The Board of Elections had no record of my registration – they must have purged me – even though I’ve been voting in NYC for nine years. Same thing happened, separately to my husband, and to someone in front of me on line. This is not the first time. They are a disaster. Someone should do a story on them. Of course, they had me and the guy in front of me and my husband fill out an affidavit and the ballot, but I doubt very much they were counted. I could make an FOIA request, but it would take forever. The press should do an investigation of purged registrations and a story.
