UPDATE: Thursday, July 17 at 9:45 a.m.: The new version of Silver Moon Bakery on Broadway between West 101st and 102nd streets, is now slated to open sometime next week, Judith Norell, the founder and owner of the original Silver Moon Bakery, told the West Side Rag on Thursday.
The new operation, currently dubbed No Name bakery, and owned by Hazem Elgohary, who also owns Buttercup Bakeshop, still needs to check all of its electrical equipment, according to Norell.
This update comes after Norell and Elgohary originally said they were expecting to open the new operation on Thursday or Friday of this week.
We will continue monitoring the opening date.

The new Upper West Side shop , a collaboration between Silver Moon Bakery and Buttercup Bakeshop, is set to open by the end of this week, both Judith Norell, the former owner of Silver Moon Bakery, and Hazem Elgohary, the owner of the new operation, as well as Buttercup Bakeshop, confirmed Monday to West Side Rag.
The bakery, still dubbed No Name Bakery, is expected to open at 2664 Broadway, between West 101st and 102nd streets, on Thursday or Friday, according to Elgohary.
“Just waiting on one last electrical repair that is scheduled for Monday,” Elgohary told the Rag via text. “The menu will reflect a soft opening, with about 60% of the items on the typical rotation: regular breads, cookies, breakfast, treats, muffins, scones, brioche, and croissants.”
He added that tarts and cakes might not be available until the weekend, and that there will also be coffee, tea, cold drinks, sandwiches, and salads.
Norell, who told the Rag she will be at the opening, described the new venture between the former Silver Moon Bakery and Buttercup Bakeshop as “each separate but equal,” and said that Elgohary “loves and respects our work and place in the community.”
“I’m very excited that SMBs legacy will continue,” she wrote via email. “And that the familiar faces working at SMB – and I – will be involved. We have missed all our friends and customers, a long-time part of the fabric of our lives.”
She added that the new bakery will begin with a shorter menu as the staff gets used to working in the new space, and that they hope to be in “full swing” by September. There will be both Silver Moon and Buttercup Bakery menu items for sale at the new location.
Silver Moon Bakery closed at the end of March after 24 years at the corner of West 105th Street and Broadway, following a legal dispute between the business and its landlord.
No Name Bakery (not expected to remain its permanent name) will use Silver Moon’s ovens, mixers, ingredients, and supplies, and retain multiple members of the old staff, with Norell as an advisor.
We will update this story when the exact opening date is decided upon.

Best of luck to the new establishment! Happy baking!
Great scoop! Hopefully you get the “as first reported by” credit you deserve in other coverage.
But Buttercup simply isn’t that good.
Agreed. Plus, their banana pudding is frozen and thawed, but fresh. Surprising since they started by splitting off from magnolia bakery
Wait, I had no idea Buttercup was a spinoff!
I also will defend Buttercup to the end as their cupcakes and bars are so good…to the point that I got an Ube birthday cake for a friend’s 40th birthday. INCREDIBLE.
Go Hazem!
The best was Cup Cake and then Cup Cake Cafe.
Why rain on a parade? This is the best possible result barring a new , reasonable lease on Silver Moon’s old spot. What is your motivation in adding negativity here? If you don’t like Buttercup, don’t go, but let us enjoy this great news–a rare happy event in a long time for this neighborhood, which has lost so many mom-and-pops.
Because Buttercup aint real good, the new bakery is unlikely to last long. That’s the problem.
“Mom + Pop” hardly means it’s good. There’s a lot of not great pizza in NYC, but the shops are individually owned. I’m sure you can think of other examples.
So excited!
Finally news we can be thrilled about. So happy this is becoming a reality!!
Wonderful news! It’s so heartening to see that a good thing we thought was lost is not lost after all.
Certain bakeries of the UWS haunt my memories. Eclair with its unforgettably grand Opera Torte, Grossinger’s amazing cinnamon rolls made with two kinds of dough (I’m not telling the secret), Cakemasters with their individual coffee ring, and PartyCake’s English tea cake with an almond topping and custard filling, and all so reasonable! I was never crazy about Lichtman’s. Does anyone remember Beaudesir, a French shop with cheeses, croissants, and other goodies near 73rd and Broadway? Not sure how long it lasted.
We loved Les Friandises. Plus, The Natural Source had the best ever carrot cake, with pistachios instead of walnuts and no coconut.
Eclair’s Opera Torte and Grossinger’s kindness to children … be still my heart!
the whole dynamic is so weird, one can tell stuff is going on behind the scenes. Hopefully they can carry SMB’s legacy. Best of luck to them, I’ll help how I can
That’s the best news around this neighborhood in a long time!
Separate but equal? We will pray for them!
Really odd turn of phrase to use for anything in this day and age. Fingers crossed one of the owners doesn’t feel the need for lebensraum any time soon.
Pay The Piper, your levity has made my morning! Funny, yet…yikes!
Great news for bakery lovers.
I hope they have their fig and hazelnut baguette 🥖 sliced and frozen, I could quickly whip up crostini whenever I needed a good fix! On another note, I miss cafe lalo. I know, I know… not a true bakery, yet still it was a great spot for tarts and cakes, sandwiches and quiche. Sigh, change is the only constant
Who does *not* miss Café Lalo?…Sob.
Will be interesting to see if all expectations are met.
I hope they renovate/paint the exterior.
I will be there with bells on, but dang I missed this place being around the corner from me!
Please please please bring back the mozzarella pesto sandwich and whole wheat Pullman bread. Can’t wait!!
I have been calling the landlord because I want to buy the Restaurant signage from the old diner there. Please reach out!
Please still support Zelmas across the street.
I miss the American Diner from the space it will replace. Sniffles.
2664 Broadway is Albanian Universe Hair Salon which looked 100% in active operation today, July 19. Is the space we’re talking about directly to the left of the hair salon and sharing the same address?
