“Fewer”!
Thank you. That is one of my pet peeves. It’s a particular violation that is happening more often, and it irks me to no end.
I can always count on the UWS to not converse about the actual awful thing, but to escape the hard chat with a diversion to grammar, race, or affluence, notwithstanding the urgency. Mnemonic, groan.
That escalated quickly! Less fake news please
If you can you count it (i.e. days or emails) use “fewer.” Is it something you don’t count (i.e., salt, or rain, or sugar) use “less”. I hope this helps.
We should have Garry Johnson the doorman at the Chesterfield be nominated to be the mayor of West 80th Street!
And when writing a cartoon caption (or telling a joke), word choice is by ear, not The Elements of Style.
Fair point. Poetic license. And we wuz mean. But try not to take it personal–ly.
“Less” sounds wrong to my ear. Maybe I just have odd ears.
Agreed.
Like the cartoon.
