Columns Wine Bar, a wine and tapas bar, has opened at 2756 Broadway (between West 105th and 106th streets). They serve red, white, and sparkling wines, including Mediterranean wines spanning from Spain to Greece and local wines from upstate New York and New Jersey. They also serve hand-crafted cocktails. Calle Ocho, a “nuevo Latino” restaurant that closed in 2022, used to be in the space. (Thanks to Tasha for the tip)

Jeannie’s Dream, a shop selling hats and women’s accessories at 60 West 75th Street (between Columbus and Central Park West), is closing at the end of the month. “I design and make my own hats [and] have my own label,” Jean Gesthalter, the owner, told the Rag. “I love the people. I gave it my all,” she said. The store has been on the UWS for the past 10 years – first on West 72nd Street and then the current location since 2021. The first 30 years of the business were on Long Island. There’s a clearance sale going on now. “I don’t know what I’m going to do now, but I’ll do something,” Gesthalter told the Rag.

Earthbar, a juice and smoothie shop, has signage up in the Equinox fitness club at 344 Amsterdam (between West 76th and 77th streets), replacing a Juice Press. It is planning to open in early February, a representative confirmed to the Rag. The shop will be open to the public (not just Equinox members), and Earthbar has a loyalty rewards program for discounts through its mobile app. Earthbar was founded in 1971 and has multiple locations in California. In NYC, there’s an Earthbar in the Equinox on the Upper East Side and more are planned to open.

The Gyro Project, a Mediterranean restaurant, is opening on February 28th at 2062 Broadway (at West 71st Street). The Gyro Project has a restaurant in Fort Lee, NJ. Their platters include gyro, souvlaki, and falafel. They serve traditional Greek and Mediterranean fare such as pitas, bowls, salads, and spreads (hummus, tzatziki, baba ghanoush). The Gyro Project is also planning to open outlets in Kips Bay in April and in Newark, NJ, in February. The space used to be Cafe Metro, which closed earlier in January.

HEYTEA, a bubble tea shop, has signage up at 2815 Broadway (between West 108th and 109th streets). The menu includes matcha-flavored lattes and drinks, fruit tea, milk tea, and other Chinese teas. Founded in 2012, HEYTEA operates on a franchise model and has several locations in NYC and 4,000 stores globally. The space used to be a sales gallery for The Rockwell, a luxury condo building on West 103rd Street. (Thanks to Tracy and Paul for the tips.)

I used to visit my grandmother on 106th and B’way in the 60s and 70s, and it was a pretty tough area! How she’d have loved seeing how much it’s changed for the better, and how we would’ve enjoyed a wine bar nearby 🙂
I assume Columns Wine Bar is NOT the gluten-free, kosher establishment you wrote about here: https://www.westsiderag.com/2023/03/09/openings-and-closings-mughlai-zizi-oakberry-unnamed-kosher-gluten-free-spot-ban-ban-shop
Another bubble tea place!?
Line was around the corner yestereday.
The college kids really really love sugar!
The local economy around Columbia caters to a certain type of consumer.
[complain about something because never happy]
There is also a new weed establishment on Broadway between 84/85th Street.
There’s a sign up for new weed dispensary on Broadway around 92nd in that new apartment building. Another Flower Power which already has a store on W66th St.
Slight clarification; “The Flowery” is not related to Flower Power on W66th.
But seriously, continue to support the same black market seller you used to purchase from back when it was a risky business. Supporting stores that pay taxes to the same state that tried to jail you for possession not so long ago seems kinda hypocritical if you ask me. Let me know if you need a referral to one!
You’re right I came here to say it was actually the Flowery. Flower Power would be better. The Flowery is one of the worst, they all sell the same products so they compete on price and they’re bad on price. My favorite is Bliss and Lex on the east side. The weed bodega I used to buy from on Broadway is still open and selling after hours if anyone wants to go there.
Barzini padlocked due to violations.
Not quite. A sign indicating closed for a brief period. No padlock.
Went to Columns last Friday. Great food and drinks! GREAT atmosphere. Really needed in the area as there’s nothing like it. Come and support. Won’t be sorry you did. Can only take so many noodle and bubble tea spots.
Wondering if Taim (on Broadway b/t 92nd & 93rd, I think) is ever going to open. I thought it was supposed to open last fall, but whenever I happened to walk by there’s no noticeable change to the signage and it doesn’t seem like any work is being done. The location is also not shown on the coming soon location map on their website.
Party city Columbus and 92 closing too
Is Columns in the space that used to house Balcony decades ago?
Columns is in the space that for many many years was an Italian restaurant called “Meridiana”
“Columns Wine Bar” is a “wine and tapas bar” that serves “red, white, and sparkling wines” including “Mediterranean wines” and “local wines”.
That’s great — but do they have any wine??
I’m excited for the gyro project. So much better than another deli or pre-made sandwich shop.
Columns Wine – another place you can get a glass of wine for the price of a bottle. Sounds great to me!
Sorry to hear about Jennies Dream. I never heard about the store and would have loved to visit it. It is or was a unique shop by a dedicated creator and I’m sorry I didn’t know about it.
Is the Avenues Bakery on Broadway at about 83 ever going to open? The signage has been up for many months.
There was a stop work order pasted to the door, I have not checked recently. But there seems to be no activity going on inside
I am kind of excited about the Gyro Project! Yay!!!
