Most NYC Shootings Took Place in Same ‘Hot Spots’ Since 2020: Here’s Where on the UWS

A new map created by Gothamist shows where all of New York City’s recorded shooting incidents have taken place since 2020, including on the Upper West Side.

The map was created with datasets provided by the NYPD, along with other 2024 fatal shooting data compiled by Gothamist. The map is then broken down by census block, which is the smallest area captured by NYPD data.

The map specifically looks at shooting incidents from January 2020 to June 2024.

“This map shows how concentrated shootings have been over time and provides context as to how gun violence plays out in all five boroughs,” Gothamist wrote about the findings provided by the map.

Here’s what the map shows for the Upper West Side

There have been no fatal shootings on the Upper West Side in 2024, according to the Gothamist map.

The largest number of shooting incidents on the Upper West Side, according to the map, was recorded in the stretch of blocks from West 100th to 105th streets, specifically between Amsterdam and Columbus avenues

In total, there were five shooting incidents from West 100th to 102nd streets, between Amsterdam and Columbus avenues, as well as five more shooting incidents from West 104th to 105th streets, between Amsterdam and Columbus avenues.

There were an additional seven shooting incidents during the time period, also between West End and Columbus avenues, from West 100th to 105th streets.

That means there have been 17 shooting incidents in that stretch of blocks over the last four years, according to the map.

There were a few other Upper West Side areas where multiple shooting incidents were recorded over the last four years.

  • West 88th to 94th streets, between Broadway and Central Park West: five shooting incidents.
  • West 66th to 73rd streets, from Broadway to the westernmost section of Central Park: five shooting incidents.
  • West 60th to 65th streets, between West End and Amsterdam avenues: seven shooting incidents.

You can check out the map for yourself — HERE.

Correction: The story initially said there have been no fatal shootings on the Upper West Side since 2020, but the Gothamist data only included fatal shooting incidents in 2024. There have been no fatal shootings on the Upper West Side in 2024.

How strange that these shooting occurred basically in the shadow of the 24th precinct located on 100th street, between Amsterdam and Columbus.

Shootings are concentrated in and around NYCHA’s Frederick Douglass Houses, NYCHA’s Wise Towers, and NYCHA’s Amsterdam Houses.

Indeed. And it’s remarkable the extent to which an overlay of shootings track NYCHA developments.

You say “West 66th to 73rd streets, from Broadway to the westernmost section of Central Park: five shooting incidents” but the color coded section of the map appears to be 66 to 73rd from Amsterdam to West End Ave directly North of the other section you mention.

One of the 3 areas called out as hotspots of shootings in the article is a bit misleading.
“West 66th to 73rd streets, from Broadway to the westernmost section of Central Park: five shooting incidents.”
The area is stretched to include Central Park when most of the blocks between Broadway and Central Park West had no shootings. The area was essentially gerrymandered to include enough shootings to fit into the story,
If you click on the link at the end of the article you can see a larger map that includes a legend showing what the colors mean.

WSR – could you at least add the legend to the map you are showing?

How many of the shootings took place outside the Projects? I am betting many of the shootings don’t even involve residents.

“There have been no fatal shootings on the Upper West Side since 2020“ – we live in a very safe neighborhood! Over 200,000 people live here.

That’s the spirit! That’s because they’re all expert marksmen. They aim to only gravely wound and scare, not kill.

38 shootings in 4 years in a small area with only 200,000 people – virtually none of whom own a legal weapon, and none of whom are allowed to carry it in the streets – and “safety” is your takeaway!?

Josh, nice try with your elitist statistics, which fail to consider how scared our neighbors in NJ feel when they read the NY Post. They are often too scared to shop or dine out at UWS restaurants, which as we all know is the economic engine of every small business.

Most UWS businesses are not dependent on NJ residents to be an “economic engine”. This is a myth and in fact there was a study done that proved that. Perhaps the Rag can dig out a link.

Many people in NJ work here and pay their income taxes here, not to NJ.

Are these shooters aware of our very strict gun laws?

So put more cameras, more police, more patrolling in these areas, especially the NYCHA houses.
