Karina Rykman grew up on the UWS, the only child of two Columbia professors with specialties in philosophy, art history, and French. Yet her specialty, from the time she was an 8th grader at the Upper West Side’s Calhoun School, has been rock & roll. Yesterday in UWS Weekend, WSR highlighted her debut album, Joyride, which she co-produced with fellow UWSer Trey Anastasio of Phish. Here’s the multi-talented musician on what it’s like playing with the 8G Band on “Late Night with Seth Meyers,” where she prefers to jam on the UWS, and why it’s Zabar’s or bust for her.
Talk to me about the Upper West Side
Of course I’m biased, as I was born and raised here, but there’s something so special about the UWS. Being surrounded by both Riverside and Central Parks definitely has something to do with it. As a kid, it was really fun to cause a ruckus in this very safe and calm pocket of Manhattan.
What’s the coolest thing about playing with the 8G House Band on “Late Night with Seth Meyers”?
I love anything “show business” and this definitely checks that box. It’s so fun to go down to 30 Rock, get dolled up by the Glam Squad, and then rip it up on TV. I’ve had some crazy experiences, including when Tracy Morgan asked me: “How much you selling that guitar for?” and brought me into a whole bit. And jamming with Larry David was awesome! It’s such an extraordinary crew, and it’s wild to see how a show like that comes together.
Best place to listen to music on the UWS/Best place to play music on the UWS
The Beacon Theater probably takes both of those awards. I saw upwards of 70 Allman Brothers Band shows there. It’s one of the most ornate and gorgeous places to hear and play live music; it’s both grand and intimate at the same time. You just can’t beat it.
How’d you get started musically?
My friend Bobby put an acoustic guitar in my lap during 8th-grade recess at Calhoun and taught me “Seven Nation Army” by the White Stripes. I’ve had tunnel vision ever since.
What’s your schmear?
Everything bagel, untoasted, with scallion cream cheese, tomato, onion & capers. Shout out to Absolute Bagels.
New Yorker, NY Magazine or New York Times?
Amanda Petrusich’s writing in the The New Yorker is my favorite. She was my professor at NYU and she’s as lovely as she is brilliant. Her presence on the page is always a delight.
If you could have a coffee klatch with any New Yorker, living or dead, who would it be and where?
I’d love to drink espresso with Joey Ramone. Let’s be real – it’d probably be on a bench outside a burnt-out bodega.
Don’t Curb Your Enthusiasm. What’s the most interesting thing you’ve ever found on the curb?
Ha! I found a pretty decent skateboard as a kid and rode it for a good while. Sweet ground score!
Speaking of “Curb”, Jerry or Larry?
Oof, it’s like picking a favorite child. I love them both with my whole heart. Gun to my head, I’ll say Larry.
Pick a Park
I’m going for the underdog: Riverside. I grew up in that park. Central is obviously the most iconic and absolutely jaw-dropping, but the thing about Riverside that Central just can’t compete with is when you go all the way down to the Hudson. My parents walk along the river every single day.
Levain’s chocolate chip or oatmeal raisin?
Levain’s chocolate chip! You can share one with about ten people and still have enough to go around! They’re spectacular.
Citibike, cab, bus, or subway?
Subway! I love listening to music on the subway. It’s one of the biggest things I miss when I go on tour.
West Side Drag/West Side Brag
I wish there was ONE more subway line that stopped somewhere between Broadway and CPW. One awesome thing about the UWS is that it’s its own little enclave with its own distinct vibe and character, which is uniquely singular compared to the rest of Manhattan.
Zabar’s or Citarella?
Zabar’s, no question. I have so much Zabar’s merch. It’s one of my favorite places on the planet.
What’s your desert-island disc?
“Paul’s Boutique” by the Beastie Boys. Enough samples to keep me occupied forever.
