The final meeting of the 2023-2024 year of the NYC chapter of the Hearing Loss Association of America will take place on June 18 at 6:00-7:30. Our featured speaker, Dr. Alexander Chern, will discuss his life story- including how he overcame the challenges of hearing loss to achieve academic success. In addition, he will describe how his hearing loss informed his choice to become an ear surgeon. He will finish with a description of his current research in music, hearing and cognition. That night we will also award the fourth annual $5000 Albert B. Chen scholarship for a high school senior with hearing loss to Kiana Clercin.

Dr. Alexander Chern

Dr. Chern is a fellow in otology/neurotology (ear and skull base surgery) at Johns Hopkins University. Prior to his position at Johns Hopkins, he received a BS in Molecular Biophysics and Biochemistry at Yale College, and MD at Vanderbilt. After graduating Vanderbilt, he completed his residency training in Otolaryngology-Head & Neck Surgery at the combined Columbia and Weill Cornell program at NY Presbyterian Hospital. In his residency, he worked with Dr. Justin Golub and Dr. Anil Lalwani. Some of you may have participated in his research on music perception and enjoyment with hearing loss. Dr. Chern was recently among the inaugural recipients of the Renée Fleming NeuroArts Investigator Award for his work examining the intersection of music, hearing, and cognition. In addition to his academic and medical achievements, Dr. Chern is an accomplished violinist.

Kiana Clercin

With many outstanding applicants, it was difficult to choose a winner, but we are very pleased to present the 4TH Annual Albert B. Chen scholarship to Kiana Clercin. Kiana, a student at Brooklyn Institute of Liberal Arts, will enter the John Jay College of Criminal Justice where she intends to major in criminology. Kiana was Editor-in-Chief and co-founder of her high school newspaper and helped establish a support group for her fellow students with hearing loss.

Please limit comments to 150 words and keep them civil and relevant to the article at hand. Comments are closed after six days. Our primary goal is to create a safe and respectful space where a broad spectrum of voices can be heard. We welcome diverse viewpoints and encourage readers to engage critically with one another’s ideas, but never at the expense of civility. Disagreement is expected—even encouraged—but it must be expressed with care and consideration. Comments that take cheap shots, escalate conflict, or veer into ideological warfare detract from the constructive spirit we aim to cultivate.
