Admit it, Upper West Siders — you’ve entertained the idea of venturing to the suburbs. Perhaps you’re anticipating a new addition to the family, can’t wait to have a yard, or you just need more space. Sure, you’ve loved living in the city, but it could be time to make a move.
Sound familiar? If so, it’s time to start exploring suburbia — and fall is the perfect time. Whether you want to be in by summer, just want to see what’s out there, or are years from making the leap, getting out there now will help give you the lay of the land and inform all that comes next. Some other reasons to start exploring now?
Discovering Your Ideal Suburb Takes Time
Starting to explore the suburbs – and then narrowing down to a particular town – can be a journey. While you might be enamored with the first town you visit, it might also take a few exploratory trips before you discover a community that truly aligns with your lifestyle.
“We work with clients on all timelines, and it’s never too early to start the conversation to plan for a future move,” says Suburban Jungle NYC Strategist Allison Levine. “The first step is an initial call with a Strategist, followed by town tours to visit and explore a range of communities. Fall is an amazing time to get a real feel for each town.”
Broaden Your Horizons
Often, our knowledge of the suburbs is based on where friends or relatives have settled or the few suburban towns with major name recognition. But as Allison says, “There are hidden suburban gems that many city dwellers might not be aware of. Beyond those frequently mentioned are towns that offer unique charm, community, and convenience.”
Suburban Jungle’s experts help clients find the town that best aligns with their wish list and lifestyle. For example, a community that seamlessly blends the arts and culture you adore on the Upper West Side, with the tranquility of suburban life. Or a foodie haven with a quick commute and A+ public schools.
“I was set on towns I had frequently visited,” shares a former Upper West Sider, now settled in Pelham. “But by branching out, I found a community that was a perfect fit for our family, balancing our need for green space with our love for cultural events.”
The Suburbs Shine Brightest in the Fall
“The fall unveils a special charm in the suburbs,” adds former UWS resident and Suburban Jungle NYC Strategist Eleanor Johnson.. “With the leaves changing and great weather, it’s a beautiful time to explore. Also, the towns host fun fall events and festivals so it’s a perfect time to get a genuine sense of community…and get a break from the city for a day!”
Starting now, she adds, sets the stage for potential moves, giving you a taste of what each season might offer in your new home.
“Start your suburban exploration over the next few weeks,” Eleanor suggests. “Take a tour with us, visit the local restaurants, stroll through the parks, and attend a town fair. Familiarize yourself with the community’s pulse, and when the time is right, you’ll have a clear vision of your next chapter after the Upper West Side.”

Suburbs–fech! Give me the UWS.
How many people wanting to remove parking spots on the UWS will move to Westchester or Connecticut and then drive cars and enjoy it and their single family home? A lot.
You know, there are trains that will take you to Westchester and Connecticut. One might even say the reason those two locations grew to what they are is due to their proximity to NYC via train.
Didn’t you say in another post that you drive a car and don’t live on the UWS?
Oh yeah— I plan on keeping my high rise apartment in the upper west side and buy in CT. We’ll splash for the Southampton cottage after. Easy
