Shortly before 1 a.m. on Sunday, an unidentified man in his 40s fell onto the tracks while walking between cars on a southbound 1 train, at the West 79th Street and Broadway station, police reported. He was taken to Mount Sinai Medical Center in critical condition.
“Ladies and gentlemen, not only is it unsafe, it is a violation to ride or walk between cars except in an emergency or when directed by a police officer or the train crew. For a complete list of rules in the subway, visit http://www.mta.info. Thank you.”

If I need or want to switch cars, I wait until the next station. What’s the hurry?
A friend got fined for walking between cars on a train while it was sitting in a station with the doors open (on the shuttle at Grand Central). A police officer pulled him and someone else off the train when dozens of people were doing the same thing.
I understand and appreciate the law that you can’t walk between cars on a moving train – this makes perfect sense and this article is an unfortunate reminder of why the law is in place. I’m not clear why you can’t do so if the doors are open so it clearly is not moving – unfortunately this has become increasingly necessary to get away from unsavory characters or to go from an car that isn’t air conditioned to one that is.
