On Sunday, November 20th, there will be a Free Children’s Book Fair in the lobby of the Marlene Meyerson JCC Manhattan, on Amsterdam Avenue at 76th Street, from 1 – 4pm.
“Families and schools have donated thousands of new and gently-used books — books that kids have outgrown and just sit on shelves or, let’s be honest, in piles or boxes,” said City Council Member Gale Brewer, in her weekly newsletter. “Now, another generation of young people can access them.”
Brewer is sponsoring the fair in partnership with the Literacy Programs at the JCC. In addition to in-person distribution, volunteers will be “making packages of books to be given to students in shelters, nonprofits and asylum-seeking families if they’re not able to join us,” she said.
On the subject of volunteers, the JCC has been offering the opportunity to help out before and during the Children’s Book Fair, but it appears to be sold out. Still, everyone is welcome to attend!
And speaking of books, there is a resurgence of bookstores in the United States and New York City, according to TimeOut, which includes the reopening of a Barnes & Noble bookstore on the Upper East Side, and, said the chain’s vp, “the refurbishment of our existing bookstores [beginning] with the complete overhaul of our Upper West Side bookstore,” on 82nd Street and Broadway.
We went to get books for the kiddos. Great event! Nice to see a good turnout and the volunteers were very kind and helpful even making recommendations.
