Karen is Why We Pay Our Cleaners a Living Wage

Taking care of your employees makes a difference, and when it comes to cleaning your home that difference is important. Lots of cleaning companies have tired, overworked, unhappy contractors who view your home as just another job. Who wants to pay for that?

Take a moment, scroll down, and read the interview with Karen, who we’ve been lucky enough to employ since May. She’s conscientious, smart, and incredibly friendly. Customers love her, and they should — she works hard every day to provide the best cleaning service possible. She also has big goals and she’s pushing herself to make them a reality.

Q: Where did you last work?

KAREN: I worked for Handy.  I usually booked anywhere from 8 to 10 cleaning jobs a week, all over New York

Q: How does Well-Paid Maids compare to your last job?

KAREN: I love the pay from Well-Paid Maids, and the structure. With Handy, I would have to claim my jobs and it was first come, first served. I used to get up at 2am to try to book gigs to have enough work for the week.

Q: What is your long-term goal?

KAREN: I love to travel, and wish I traveled even more! I also wouldn’t mind owning a house someday.

Q: How does Well-Paid Maids fit into this goal?

KAREN: With better pay and a set schedule, Well-Paid Maids has let me increase my pay with less stress.  I can save more for vacation, plus I can use my PTO for my trips so I don’t have to lose money to travel.

Q: What else should customers know about you?

KAREN: I love to clean!  It’s not just for the money, I love the feeling of a clean house.  I also love meeting new people and watching TV!

Well-Paid Maids is NYCs only accredited living-wage home-cleaning service. All of our staff members are employees, not contractors. We start all of our employees at $26/hour, and offer a full benefits package including health, dental, and vision insurance, 22 paid days off, and 100% employer-paid commuting. We provide them with all eco-friendly supplies, so your cleaner isn’t paying for products out of pocket and you get a great clean with supplies you can trust.

Paying a living wage benefits our business in many ways. It improves recruiting. It reduces turnover. It increases service quality. It motivates customers. Those are all great things, but they aren’t why we do it.

How can Karen achieve her goals if her job doesn’t pay enough to live on? How can she realize her dreams if she can’t save money? Karen is why we pay a living wage. She deserves it. All workers do.

Make an appointment today and book with a cleaning service that matches your values. See why our customers have found us to be the best cleaning service they’ve ever had. Not only will you be supporting our employees, but you’ll also be supporting our efforts to advocate on behalf of all workers. And instead of a hurried appointment done by an underpaid, overworked independent contractor, you’ll receive a thoughtful, thorough service from one of our happy, hardworking professionals.

PS – Use coupon code WESTSIDERAG to save $20 off your first cleaning if you book by June 20th. To learn more, check out our coverage in the New York Times and on CNN, and send us an email at help@wellpaidmaids.com, or give us a ring at (212) 847-1369.

this model strikes me as smart and timely; sort of a ‘put your money where your mouth is’ approach for those with a bit more money to spend on such service. at the same time, i hope it doesn’t affect independents, which i suspect it will though overall, there’s probably room for both.

it also strikes me as a bit of a reverse Amazon approach.

good luck to all!

Hi Geoff,

Thanks for this comment! We try to offer our clients a service that matches their values, which I do think is important to people when they decide where and how to spend their money. I definitely think that there is greater room for companies to succeed with an employees first model, and it is our hope that if more companies do succeed with this model, working conditions will improve for workers everywhere. We definitely don’t share many values with Amazon!

Thank you for the best wishes, please don’t hesitate to contact me (eric@wellpaidmaids.com) if you have any other questions or if I can assist you in any way!
