An unidentified man died in a fire Tuesday morning at around 2:41 a.m. at 80 Amsterdam Avenue, which is part of the Amsterdam Houses, a New York City Housing Authority (NYCHA) development, the FDNY told WSR. The fire was contained to the fifth floor of the 13-story building, and required 12 units and 60 fire personnel to extinguish.
According to the NYPD, “When the fire was put out, the man, a resident of apartment 5F, was discovered to be deceased inside the apartment.”
A firefighter with a minor injury was taken to Mount Sinai West (Roosevelt) hospital.
The cause and origin of the fire is under investigation.
Possibly space heater related? It was quite chilly Monday/Tuesday. Unfortunate regardless.
Amsterdam Houses had another deadly fire three months ago that killed two people. If there’s a systemic danger, I hope tenants and NYCHA get it resolved soon.
Condolences to the family.
I grew up in that same building on the 11th floor. My condolences to out to the family. God bless you all.
