A 70-year-old woman and 44-year-old man were killed after a fire broke out around 11:30 p.m. Wednesday night in a 4th floor apartment at 216 W. 62nd Street, part of the Amsterdam Houses NYCHA development, an NYPD spokesperson confirmed to WSR. A third victim was transported to Mount Sinai West [Roosevelt] Hospital, according to the FDNY.
Linda Scallion, an Amsterdam Houses resident, told WSR at the scene that the victims were family members, with the third injured victim being a woman in her 70s, the mother of the man and the sister of the woman who died. “It’s terrible,” she said. “I grew up with the son that passed away. We’re a tight-knit family in this neighborhood. It’s just sad to see, especially this close to the holidays.”
NYPD said the fire was contained to the one apartment and that no other residents were displaced. An electrical issue may have been the cause of the blaze, NYPD said, noting the case is still under investigation by the Fire Marshal.
That is so so sad. I hope the injured woman heals quickly. I am so sorry for such loss
