Updated: Police Say They’ve Caught The ‘Done’ Vandal

February 5, 2021 | 3:23 PM - Updated on June 5, 2022 | 11:32 PM

Officers Guillen and Lam.

The 24th precinct announced on Friday that officers had arrested a man for vandalizing structures and even trees in Riverside Park with the word “Done”. The graffiti had been particularly pervasive late last year. One message said “Done With Life.”

We’ve reached out to the precinct commander and will update if we hear more.

Update: Deputy Inspector Naoki Yaguchi, commander of the 24th, informed us that “the individual arrested is a 19-year-old male. He was given a DAT (Desk Appearance Ticket). We were not able to ascertain the meaning behind ‘DONE.’”

While out on patrol, @NYPD24Pct Officers Guillen & Lam👮‍♂️👮‍♂️ noticed an individual who was wanted for multiple acts of graffiti vandalism following the phrase, “Done”, throughout the #UpperWestSide. The Officers quickly stopped the individual and an arrest was made. Great work❗️ pic.twitter.com/uxpqC9xw2X

“Done” probably thinks he’s an artist of some kind. He is not. And chances are, he does not need mental health treatment. Graffiti is one of the primary scourges of a city’s quality of life. His arrest is not a small matter. Thank you, NYPD. Now, make him clean it up. And when he is done with that, he can spend more time cleaning other parts of the streets and sidewalks of the city. Same with anyone else caught defacing our home. The road to recovery from the ongoing pandemic starts now.

I hope is held without bail and gets the maximum sentence allowed under law.

For spray painting? Even for the anonymous commentators of WSR, that’s a hot take.

Vandalism is a vile eyesore and some sort of bizarre ego disorder.

1) The initial article did not state what the penalty was. That is why it is labeled as an “Update.” Thanks WSR for providing this update. Many posts are from before the update was provided.

2) I believe a DAT is basically a slap on the wrist. One would hope that someone who committed the same crime repeatedly would receive a more substantial punishment.

Increased penalties for repeat offenders of quality of life crimes is a key issue in the upcoming elections. Police officers work hard and it is sad that they apprehend criminals yet those criminals are back on the streets moments later.

can you please explain which “quality of life” crimes you think should result in jail terms?

Thank you to WSR for following up. Well done by the police! This person did this numerous times and should be put away. If they also need mental health treatment, that should be offered.

Good job, 24th precinct policemen!
Is the guy paying the graffiti removal work as penalty? Our tax money is paying medical treatment for the guy.

for taggers, punishment should be they have to clean it. No reason why taxpayers should have to pay to have graffiti removed

Agree. Or at least some form of community service. Jail seems overly punitive.

And it’s not just in Riverside Park, it’s all over the neighborhood. How about one day in jail for each one I can find?

Let his punishment include cleaning every single thing he defaced and made ugly.

He definatelly should be made to clean it. Every single one! Until he’s done.

Agree that removing the graffiti is a just consequence. Jail as a punishment for taxes all of our social services unnecessarily.

Well done, Officers! It’s great you tracked him down and did as much as the law prescribes. I always appreciate learning of the work you do to take care of our community.
Beyond what the police can do: Why do I doubt the graffiti guy will stop marking the neighborhood? Will he actually show up in court? He may need mental health services – I don’t know – but I’d like him to be as accountable as I am when I cause damage.

Good that they found out who was doing this. Terrible though that he just got a slap on the wrist. There should be consequences for him, such as jail time.

Gotta say, I didn’t mind seeing the word ‘Done’ manifest in front of me just while I’ve been feeling ‘done’ myself. I always felt a little seen when I ran into one. Of course I am aware that igraffiti is a problem. But of all of the crimes and misdemeanors out there, this one bothers me the least.
