Wednesday: Protest Against Trump Expected to Start at Columbus Circle

February 5, 2020 | 9:47 AM - Updated on June 5, 2022 | 11:29 PM
in CRIME, NEWS
43

Signs from a prior rally.

President Trump is expected to be acquitted by the Senate to conclude his impeachment trial on Wednesday, and New Yorkers are planning to gather to protest the decision at 5:30 p.m. in Columbus Circle. The march is part of a campaign to “reject the coverup” supported by national groups like Common Cause and Indivisible.

One group promoting the event explains the rally:

This Wednesday, hundreds of thousands of Americans will mobilize after the final vote on the Articles of Impeachment in the Senate to Reject The Coverup. In New York City, we will convene in Columbus Circle in solidarity.

Together, we’ll demand:

Accountability — Donald Trump and the Senators and members of Congress who voted to cover up his crimes will be held accountable by their constituents.

Democracy — Now more than ever, we need to ensure a free and fair election in 2020, which means real election security reform and and end to voter suppression.

Reform — Just like after Watergate, we demand structural reforms to end the corruption and abuses of power that allowed Donald Trump’s criminal behavior in the first place.

It’s up to us to mobilize like never before — and ensure that this dark moment in our nation’s history is followed by an unprecedented level of civic action.

Lack of civility such as this and also Pelosi tearing up the speech on national television will only get Trump re-elected for 4 more years. The country needs to come together and find electable officials that can move us past this – Bernie Sanders, Pelosi, Schumer, Nadler, DeBlasio are not those people, neither are McConnell and his crew. I am not sure what the solution is but this is not it.

The calls for civility while our republic is undermined by lawlessness. THIS is the problem. We wouldn’t have become a republic if we listened to calls of civility towards the British.

“Lack of civility”

There is nothing uncivil about organized peaceful protests. You’re using the word “civilized” wrong. The right to peaceful, organized protests is crucial in a healthy democracy, along with a free and open press. Of course, our free press is under fire by Trump and his cronies. Democracy dies in darkness, after all.

Don’t assume that because people are pissed off, things are “uncivil”. This president is a scumbag, to put it kindly, and history will not be kind to him or his supporters – tacit or active.

You are completely correct. There is nothing wrong with a peaceful protest and there is nothing uncivil about it. I apologize.

I agree with you that Trump is a scumbag and will not be judged kindly in history, having said that, the goal should be to pick candidates that bring the country together, instead many of the candidates just attack and try to pit different groups against each other. Only Pete and Bloomberg talk about the future, the rest just talk about the past.

Thank you for your response, Michael.
I completely agree that some candidates as well as elected officials are toxic with their polemic, divisive talk. The best candidate for this election, and to heal the nation, is a centrist.

I agree with you Michael.

Yes, Trump’s speech was full of hot air and basically a campaign speech.

But virtually all SOTU speeches are fluff.

Pelosi’s conduct was unbecoming and will only play into Trump’s hands.

And if all of these protesters really wanted to get rid of Trump they should nominate a viable and rational Dem this year and end some of their own divisive and extreme rhetoric.

Protesting against Trump on the UWS is a bit like rallying for Kim Jong Un in Pyongyang. It’s basically a captive audience and a waste of time.

What about Trump refusing Pelosi’s offer of a handshake? Why no mention of that?

Good point re handshake.

But when I watched the speech it appeared that Pelosi stuck out her hand a moment after Trump turned away.

Maybe he was being rude but it appeared to be an oversight.

Peaceful Protests are important part of our Democracy which is under siege by the most corrupt government in America’s History. Public Opinion and clear “voices” in solidarity are exactly, what is needed as too many Americans become more fearful and confused! Pelosi,Schiff and a couple of handfuls of others have been magnificent Patriots and leaders, but they need US!

Magnificent leaders? Name me 1 accomplishment or 1 thing they aspire to realistically accomplish that does not involve removing Donald Trump. Why don’t they trust the voters to remove him?

@ Michael:
Because we saw what happened when we trusted the voters in 2016, and Drumpf can do immeasurable additional harm to the country in the few months leading up to the election.
He doesn’t just need to be removed from office, he needs to be imprisoned, like the criminal he is.

@ allie

You’re correct.

Unemployment is @ 3.6%. The stock market is at record highs. We have new trade deals with China. The country is not at war with anyone.

OK, Trump is not exactly a role model for children but to rant about Trump committing “immeasurable additional harm to the country” is hysteria and nonsense.

If the Dems truly believed Trump was doing a disastrous job they would have no fear of him being reelected and they wouldn’t be wasting everybody’s time and energy with this impeachment nonsense.

At this point the Dems couldn’t manage a 7-11. Also, can we agree that illegal immigrants shouldn’t vote? Because I have yet to hear Democrats condemn that.

Illegal immigrants cannot, and never will be able to vote. Democrats do not support this and never will. Change the channel from Fox and put on something that isn’t a shill for conspiracy theories. We’re all better than this.

Riiiight. Welcome to the cloudcuckooland of Democrats where “Putin hacked the election” but not a single illegal immigrant anywhere voted. I mean, are you really the authorities on fake news?

Did you know that even the sponsor of NY’s Green Light Bill (a Democrat) conceded that the law could be abused to register people to vote?

You are all a bunch of know nothings about Democracy and
an honest American like President Trump. You enjoy arrogant
low-lives like Nancy Pelosi. How about the corrupt district
and city she lives in with all her millions.

Wake-up or you will have a SOCIALISTIC COUNTRY,
DO YOU UNDERSTAND WHAT THAT MEANS?

Look, nobody dislikes Trump more than me (well, maybe Melania) but we live in a democracy and elections matter.

This classless buffoon won and we all have to deal with it. Unfortunately, this is what people wanted so this is what we got.

Remember when a large portion of the country freaked out about Obama? Tea Party knuckleheads, Birthers, Doomsday Preppers, etc.

Well, this is just that… but in reverse and we are on the other side now. Let’s not reduce ourselves to that level.

Well put, but you’re asking A LOT of people to take the high road. It doesn’t feel as good as complaining and bashing others who see things differently than you. Unfortunately none of it matters at this point so everybody brace yourselves for another 4 years of this! (just wish it wasn’t true)

Thanks and I am right there with you. At this point I doubt we are going to be able to avoid four more years of this craziness.

But I’ve made it through Nixon, Reagan, and 2 George Bushes and we’ll all make it through this too.

God help us.:)

I hate Trump as much as anyone but I wish these people would stop marching and protesting in the liberal echo chamber where we live and making themselves feel good. A more constructive use of time would be mobilizing voters in the battleground states. These are the places that matter. Make sure that everyone who wants to vote for a Democrat is properly registered and will be able to get to a poll in November.

Also, I really hope that all of these people are pledged to vote for whoever emerges from the Democratic primary, even if it is not their first choice. I prefer the more moderate options but if Bernie or Warren gets the nomination, I will be fully behind them, no matter what.
