Kikoo Sushi has opened at 998 Columbus Avenue between 109th and 110th Streets, the former home of Manhattan Brew & Vine. Kikoo also has an East side location. The menu is here and here. Thanks to Daniel for the tip.
Birdbath Bakery at 2244 Broadway between 80th and 81st street is closing Friday, several tipsters told us. “l loved their food and baked goods. So sad,” wrote our tipster Celeste. It’s just the latest Birdbath location to close. It will be replaced in the near term by a pop-up shop from KTCollection called Runaway Poppy, featuring handmade dishes, jewelry and other gifts. “We will be redesigning the space right away to be ready to open November 21st,” the owner Katie tells us. Thanks to Celeste and Jackie for the tips.
Don Pedro’s, a Spanish-Caribbean restaurant now located in Yokrville, is planning to move to 505 Columbus Avenue between West 84th and West 85th Streets, the former location of Kefi. It plans to open early next year, the Observer reports. Kefi has moved to 79th Street.
Frank Mac’s Pub has opened in the former home of McAleer’s at 425 Amsterdam Avenue (80th Street). The menu includes burgers, chicken wings and Irish banger meatballs, along with healthier fare like shaved brussels sprouts and a kale Caesar salad. Thanks to Taryn for the tip.
Living Thai opened recently at 931 Amsterdam Avenue (106th). Our tipster Daniel’s verdict: “pretty good.” Yelpers seem to like it too. All 11 reviews are 5’s so far, with one saying they were “rounding up to five stars because of a dearth of good Thai on the UWS.”
Roasted Masala is opening on Columbus Avenue between 104 and 105th, according to a sign posted out front. We don’t have any more info on it yet. Thanks to Evan for the tip.

Birdbath has been dead to me ever since the sketchy dealings of them temporarily turning over their space to Wymore for virtually nothing. I don’t care if they had done that for my favorite candidate – not kosher.
On a happier note, I’m glad the old Kefi space is being filled fairly quickly and I look forward to trying it.
I heard that Billy’s cupcake bakery was coming to Amsterdam Avenue. Any news?
Yep! https://www.westsiderag.com/2018/08/06/openings-closings-friedmans-restaurant-white-gold-jooneechees-billys-bakery
Speaking of the former Manhattan Brew and Vine, was anyone ever arrested in the homicide of the owner?
Wasn’t there already a Thai place under a different name at 106 and amsterdam?
I miss Tum and Yum.
Dearth of good Thai in that area?! I have to put in a word for neighborhood staple Thai Market, on Amsterdam between 107th and 108th. It’s consistently good and has been for years.
Frank Macs still doesn’t have outdoor seating. They must have really pissed off the city.
Where are the vegetarian restaurants?
Downtown has many but the UWS almost
None except Peace Food @82 Amsterdam
MORE healthy food!
Also Spring Natural Kitchen, Columbus at 83rd. Lots of vegetarian and vegan options.
Near Peace Cafe is a vegetarian Indian restaurant in the low 80s on the east side of Amsterdam. I can’t remember the name, but they’re 2 long words starting with S and B.
On Broadway around 89th in the old Dock’s space is Candle Cafe. I believe that Blossom Cafe on Columbus in the 80s is also vegetarian. There’s also Mana on Amsterdam in the low 90s and another vegetarian Indian restaurant on Amsterdam on the west side of the street just below 96th.
Sorry I can’t remember the names. Hope this helps.
Saravanaa Bhavan. They make good dosas, among other things. Also a fan of this place.
Saravana Bhavan is owned by a convicted murderer. See “Masala Dosa to Die For”, https://www.nytimes.com/2014/05/11/magazine/masala-dosa-to-die-for.html .
Whether this affects your opinion of the restaurant is up to you. But it’s a fascinating story.
Try this place for southern Indian. Amsterdam between 79th and 80th. 100% vegetarian. I love it.
