Window At Zara Clothing Store Suddenly Explodes Into The Street

A large glass display window at Zara, the clothing store at 1963 Broadway near 66th Street, shattered and exploded on Wednesday morning, shocking some passersby.

Diane Brush was nearby when it happened at about 8:20 a.m.

“She was behind the barricade but said when the window collapsed it sent glass way out onto the sidewalk and she got out of the way just in time,” her husband Charles wrote in an email to us. “The window apparently was broken earlier but stayed together, so a barrier was placed out on the sidewalk.”

No one outside appeared to be injured, she said.

A Zara manager said “the glass just exploded.” She was unavailable for further comment.

Cato: definitely an excellent and erudite response !

Of course, neither you nor anyone else noticed that the person who witnessed this had a ‘close brush’ with tragedy.

Quite fitting…as she is Ms. BRUSH !!

😂

you can tell from the picture that it’s tempered glass which almost all storefronts are these days. Regular glass would break into large sharp pieces. Whenever you see a pile of mostly uniform granular chunks like what you see above, it’s tempered glass

It’s laminated glass (a glass sandwich with an adhesive layer in between) so it holds together when broken – or if it falls apart – it does so in pebble-sized chunks so no one gets hurt.

That failure looks like thick tempered glass.. Laminated would have kept more attached to the interlayer and failed like a sheet. Also, laminated is not always tempered.
