Hundreds of firefighters attended the annual memorial service Wednesday at the Firemen’s Memorial at 100th Street and Riverside Drive, paying tribute to the 1,145 firefighters who have died over the FDNY’s 150-year history. In the past year, five firefighters have died.

Mayor de Blasio spoke at the ceremony. Afterwards, the firefighters had lunch and cigars at the Boat Basin on 79th.

“Lunch and cigars”?

I love the old time reference to smoking cigars,
A thing of the past and of the present, if the reporting is true indeed.

Is there a significance to having this on Oct. 12? I assume this is the anniversary of something? I wish it was better publicized (or maybe I just missed it) as most kids were off school yesterday and would have enjoyed it. Also would be nice not to have it on Yom Kippur so Jews could attend, but I assume it is on Oct. 12 for a reason.

Jews could attend.

The religious part was very inclusive of Jews.

very moving and respectful.

I’m not trying to stir up trouble or accuse anyone of anything – I’m sure it was very inclusive. But most Jews were in synagogue all day yesterday so would not have been able to attend. I’m sure it was not intentionally scheduled to coincide with Yom Kippur – I’m guessing it happens every year on Oct. 12 and this year that just happened to coincide with Yom Kippur. But I was just curious if that was the case and if so, what the significance of Oct. 12 is – I just did a Google search and for those who are interested, it looks like Oct. 12 is FDNY Memorial Day.

The good nuns used to tell us in school to say a prayer for ALL first responders whenever you hear a siren.
Not a bad idea especially in these troubled times.
Something to think about.

Did anyone feel they had to “take a knee”? Of course not, because 100 Irishmen would pounce on them. Where are the kneeling protestors? Cowards.
