Kombucha? Why, I don’t mind if I do!
A Bruffin? Don’t know what it is, but it sounds delicious!
The new offerings at the Grand Bazaar, formerly called GreenFlea, are hip and exciting, and they’ll be officially unveiled at the grand opening this Sunday, Sept. 11 from 10 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. The event, held in the schoolyard between 76th and 77th Street on Columbus Avenue and inside the school, benefits PS 87, The Computer School, PS 334 and PS 452.
Some of the vendors from GreenFlea will remain there, including 100-year-old Mathilde Freund, who’s been selling antique jewelry for more than 30 years. But there are several new options and the market will have pop-up shops each week too. Here are a few of the shops expected to show up on Sunday:

A team from Etsy will also apparently be sending different vendors each week.
By the way, a Bruffin is “a brioche dough muffin.” It comes in 16 flavors.

Why did all of these vendors avoid GreenFlea?
The GreenFlea was kind of dowdy and I always enjoyed going there and browsing. The Grand Bazaar sounds frighteningly upscale. I’ll give it a chance, but I know I’ll miss the old market.
Re: “The Grand Bazaar sounds frighteningly upscale.”
AUX BARRICADES, MES AMI !!!
La Revolucion begins !
Grab your torches and pitchforks !
We shall drive the upscale out of our Upper West Side ! We shall send it to Westchester, or even to …ugh!…New Jersey (altho’ that may be considered cruel-and-unusual punishment).
We shall bring back shabbiness, blandness, ugliness,……
all of which we once complained about, no?
Mes Amis, je crois.
The UWS was NEVER bland or ugly. That’s the UES. Big post-war boxes, no ornamentation. I think you’re conflating a few things.
Upscale? On the UWS? Columbus Ave? Never! Who would ever go??
This sounds great! Looking forward to checking it out
Everything in this city is going upscale. There is so little definition of neighborhoods anymore. This used to be a funky local flea market, next thing we know it will be on HGTV. I miss the grit of New York City, which is not too much of a problem since I soon won’t be able to afford to live here anymore (I can already hear the responses….good, leave if you don’t like it! change with the times! etc.) Sigh and shrug.
I totally agree with kbmc. (And a pox on all the interlopers who like living in an upscale shopping mall!)
you still have the grit and you also have grime now that all the homeless are back and the streets are dirtier
They never left, we just decided to stop inhumanely locking them up to keep affluent anxiety at a low. Welcome to New York, where the rich aren’t allowed to live in an affluent bubble and are forced to deal with reality like the rest of us.
You are just adorable!!:)
Fun at parties I bet too…
A little bit of Smorgasburg right here on the UWS! Just in time for the shutdown of the L train!
It already had a soft opening and is empty most of the time.
any book vendors, as of yore?
HGTV already films Flea Market Flip at the Green Flea. Not sure if that will continue. Whenever I go by since the change it is empty. Tumbleweed empty!
The fact that it has been empty may have had more to do with it being the summer, when a lot of people are out of town on weekends. The next few Sundays will be a better test.
Odd that the promoters would choose 9/11 as what appears to be a “celebration” of additional vendors to what heretofore was the Green Market. Maybe they could have put this off for a week, no?
maybe 15 years is enough moping
Re: “maybe 15 years is enough moping”
INCREDIBLE !
You cannot be someone who loves this city and what it stands for !
We, who will NEVER FORGET 9/11 do not “mope” but instead honor the sacred memory of the nearly 3,000 souls lost on that horrible day, brought about by religious crackpots taught to hate everyone who is not of their faith.
“Go out and shop.”
Is it possible to rent space for one or two weeks?
Ebay and other online activity has taken a huge bite out of flea markets all over the USA. As such places have had to adapt to survive.
Then there is simply the fact if you know where to look (Housing Works, Goodwill, etc…) you can get a leg up on where many of the vendors of old got their merchandise and cut out the middleman (or woman) and their markup.
you know that people go to flea markets for the fun of it
Not everything is neo liberal economics
I was a vendor at Greenflea from 1990 to 2014 weekly. Change in management caused the downfall and lack of advertising. I miss the market and the patrons that I have seen evolve. As a silversmith, true artists are not appreciated at such venues but we enjoy meeting the new faces and selling our wares. having the junk and craft was a great mix and drew many. Hopefully it will be a success as I miss it.
Mmmm Anthi’s is seriously tasty Greek food.
Really want to love Anthis but the place needs a little sprucing up. The takeaway shop on Amsterdam always seems a bit dirty. The food is tasty but the display cases and packaging leave much to be desired.
All the best on your new outdoor retail.
can’t wait till they start charging admission! they already locked the side entrance on 76th St. Anybody know how much the rents increased?
I don’t see charging admission to a Public Schoolyard.
I went last week. It was awful and boring.
Appreciate your review. Also, the brevity in which you conveyed your thoughts.
Gotta’ stop here.
Just a thought, but I don’t understand why at least the outside part of this market can’t be dog friendly. Might actually bring in more customers, if a person – such as myself – walking their dog, could stop in and check it out.
