Orwashers Bakery is one step closer to opening at 81st and Amsterdam in the former home of Pet Health Store. They’re now looking for bakers. Last we had heard they were aiming to open by August 1 — hopefully this means they’ll be ready to open sometime later this month.
Are you an early riser who has experience as a baker? Email jules@orwashersbakery.com.
Thanks to Jeremy Motz for the photo.
Don’t get in line for baked goods just yet. That sign was in their window last Spring, too.
I see that they want someone who is an…early riser. They took the joke right outta my mouth.
They’d be better off looking for this kind of help on the Upper Yeast Side
Alternatively, they’re looking for self-risers as well.
so excited for this……..NOT
I rarely go to a bakery, maybe twice a year, but I’m curious as to why anyone would be against having one in the neighborhood.

Get a grip, guys–their rye (just for starters) is the best in town; the only people who should be seriously worried are Zabar’s & Pain Quotidien!
“For starters.” I see what you did there, Sue. Can’t make sourdough bread without a good starter; not so sure about rye.
Recently, we purchased some bakery items at the East Side location for the first time, given Orwasher’s historic reputation. The Irish Soda bread, rolls and jelly donut were awful and expensive. A new owner bought out the family a few years ago. Suggest others try the current location first.
“A new owner bought out the family a few years ago.” – Sal
Knowing this fact since the Announcement has dampened my enthusiasm. Add to this fact that the Eastside location has low rep among breadies and almost no enthusiasm left.
But there is always hope, I guess.
