A man was knocked out of his motorized wheelchair after being hit by a car on Sunday afternoon around 3:15 p.m. when a sedan and taxi collided, according to the Daily News.
Witness Luis Rivera, 32, said the man in the wheelchair was crossing Broadway at W. 103rd St. when the yellow cab blew through a red light, striking the sedan, which had crept into the intersection to make a right turn.
“He speeded up, but then my light changed, and I didn’t think he was gonna keep going, so I went a little bit and I hit him,” said Jovani Dominguez, the sedan’s driver. He wouldn’t comment further.
The impact sent one of the vehicles careening into the man in the wheelchair.
“The cab just took the light,” Rivera said. “When the car hit the guy in the wheelchair, he flew into the air.”
The man was conscious after the crash. We are awaiting more information on what happened and whether any of the drivers faced charges from the 24th precinct.
I walked by the aftermath of the crash Sunday. I couldn’t tell what happened but it definitely looked like it was Dblasios fault.
No, it was an out-of-control, spandex-clad Lance Armstrong wannabe’s fault, obviously.
Taxi runs red light at 103rd, hits sedan that’s failing to yield into the crosswalk, where a man in a wheelchair is crossing the street?!?
This is awful. I can only imagine how upset his family must be.
Ironic that today’s New York Post cover story is about police in the Bronx who don’t see the point in ticketing dangerous drivers.
What makes you think the sedan was failing to yield. It sounds like he was waiting to make the turn. Although I admit I’m confused by the quote “He speeded up…” I don’t know who He is.
I think the guy speeding up is the cab driver. According to the quote, he speeds up and blows through a red.
I wasn’t there and you’re right – if the sedan driver was yielding, the cabbie still could have hit the sedan and knocked him into people in the crosswalk. I read the sedan driver’s quotes like he was creeping into the intersection to make a right turn either ahead of his green, or too impatient to wait for the guy in a wheelchair in the crosswalk. Just my interpretation of the quote. Cameras would be helpful to say for sure.
The Man in the Motorized Wheel Chair was going 25 mph in a 15 mph speed zone.
This was a terrible accident. I really don’t’ think it’s anything to joke about. I was there and the poor man was bleeding profusely and hurt very badly.
What the story fails to also mention, is that after the sedan and the taxi collided, the taxi hit about 3 more parked cars in addition to the man. So, lots of lives and property affected.
How could they leave out that he hit other cars. I mean, think of the cars!!!
