A caviar boutique is here, and gelato is on its way, as a longtime cleaners gets set to close its doors.
Olma Caviar Boutique & Lounge opened on Friday at 420 Amsterdam Avenue between 80th and 81st streets. One reader who stopped in on Sunday around 2:30 said she was disappointed with the serving size. “I ordered the first thing on the menu, red salmon caviar on a blini,” she said. “The blini was the size of a Ritz cracker and I was amused it came with a knife, so I could cut it into two pieces.” The Plaza location has gotten good Yelp reviews. Amorino Gelato is getting close to opening at 414 Amsterdam Avenue (80th), and is now looking for employees. The store is known for layering its gelato to make it look like a flower. Thanks to Peter for the photo.
A longtime clothes cleaning business is closing after more than 50 years, Mike tells us: “the French Cleaner (Claner, since the “e” has been missing from the sign for ages) on Columbus and 70th has a sign in the window that it’s closing after 50+ years in business.”
Bistro Citron on Columbus Ave at 83rd Street is now serving a full breakfast menu.
And Tavern on the Green has been opening its courtyard on balmy days, and will open it for good on April 4, co-owner Jim Caiola told us. The beer garden opens the first week of May. The restaurant has also expanded its hours to spring/summer hours so it’s open all week. Check out the current menus.

The French cleaners that is closing is called ‘anel’ – not Claner. The reason for this is that they originally called it Chanel. The father of an old friend of mine was the attorney for Chanel and its copy rights, etc.
Upon discovering the sign, rather than go thru the process of changing the name and getting a new sign, they simply removed the ‘C’ and called t ‘anel’ for the next 50 years. Sorry to see it close.
Olma Caviar Boutique & Lounge will be closed in 12-24 months.

When I first moved back to the UWS after a 22 yr tour of duty in LA, they were my local Dry Cleaner’s and walking in there to pick up/drop off my laundry always made me feel like I was “home again” as a New Yorker. Sad, indeed. I hope they realize what a part of the neighborhood they have been for so many, for so long.

Never a peep about anything on Broadway and the 80s. Duane Reade sitting empty for years until Halloween when it becomes a shithole and lots of empty sores in the area. NO GOOD FOOD shops. It is just a good food to buy wasteland. Sad
Talk to some of your free market economics buddies and have them explain the semantics of “economics 101” and why this is a good thing. /s

If it’s the floral lantern shades that
you miss from Tavern on the Green’s patio,
there is a small shop on Columbus that
has the assorted old shades.
The shop is on the west side and is somewhere south of 72nd St but not as far
the post office.
You will see the shades in the window and hanging.

The owner sells vintage things from restaurants.
Honestly the menu at Olma looks pretty reasonable, assuming the quality is there. A trio of foie gras or caviar bites for $13, even on Ritz-sized blinis, seems like a very fair price. I’d actually be wary of anyone selling those eats for less.

I live on 80th, so stopped by Olma and found it very reasonable–something I certainly did not expect. Staff was lovely. I wish them much luck though I think the demographics of the neighborhood are not quit right.
