While grand larcenies are down 24% this year in the 20th precinct, there have been some major thefts in recent weeks, including at the Upper West Side’s temple of tech.
- A woman wearing an Apple store shirt walked out of the Apple store at 1981 Broadway on February 16 at 3:30 pm with eight of the latest iPhone 6+. She had help, according to police, who say that one man waited downstairs for the merchandise, and a second man distracted workers on the street level of the two-level store. Valued at $5,392, there were four silver, 2 gold, and 2 green iPhones (likely the 5c version, Apple fans tell us, because the 6+ doesn’t come in green).
- On Valentine’s Day, a man stuffed lipstick, nailpolish, foundation and mascara into his pockets and backpack at the CVS at 200 West End Avenue, and left without paying, police report. The thief could have saved himself the effort. As Marilyn Monroe used to say: “A smile is the best makeup any girl [or boy] could wear.”
- A 53-year-old woman left her handbag on a table at Starbucks at 80th/Bway on February 19 at 2:00 pm. She turned to pay the cashier, and turned back to find her handbag gone. Police say her wallet, sunglasses, credit and debit cards, and phone charger, were in the bag. “People treat it like it’s their living room,” pointed out one of our favorite local cops.
- A Fordham student in the Lowenstein building at 113 West 60th Street lost an ipad mini and macbook Air, valued at $1,649, when she forgot her bag in a classroom on February 17, police say.
“… an unauthorized man …”?
“Green” iPhones? Gray, Silver, Gold or Rose Gold are the choices.
WSR, Instead of more writers, you need more editors!
Fair enough. The writing was good but the editor gets a C-.
Any good news?
Yes Bonnie, there’s good news: the 20th Precinct shows a consistent drop in crime. NYPD full stats here: https://www.nyc.gov/html/nypd/downloads/pdf/crime_statistics/cs-en-us-020pct.pdf and a bottom line summary is on West Side Rag here: https://www.westsiderag.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/02/Crime-Stats-Feb-22nd-768×625.jpg Crime would be reduced more if we kept our heads up and our eyeballs forward vs. gazing at our cellphone like they’re The Oracle.
Confirmed just now with DCPI, 8 6+ iphones: 4 silver, 2 gold, 2 space green. JB
There isn’t a Starbucks at 80th and Broadway. -sigh- Yep, a little more editing might be in order if the WSR wants to be seriously credible.
There’s a Starbucks with an address on Broadway between 80th and 81st. I think quibbling about the exact address is missing the forest for the trees.
Bit of a schizoid afternoon, eh, Jeremy (# 8 and # 9)?
Not to worry — we all have days like that.
(Unless, of course, you’re *sitting* at the Starbucks….)
They are 2 different Jeremys.
“They are two different Jeremys”.
Or at least that’s what they’d *like* you to believe….
That Starbucks is on the corner of 81st, so fail on the editing.
How does somebody get their hands on that many iphones? Aren’t the display ones tethered?
It is sad but sometimes people are careless. Yes, according to Mayor de Blasio and the Commish NYC is one of the safest cities in the world.
However, opportunists abound everywhere in NYC. You have to be careful and protect your property at all times. I think women who hook their bags onto the back of a chair are taking a big risk.
