A man was stabbed in the back during a robbery on 88th street and Columbus Avenue shortly after 5 p.m. on Thursday.

The 33-year-old victim was walking West on 88th street near Columbus, when he was approached by a suspect who placed a sharp object against his back, according to an NYPD spokesperson. The assailant told him to give him the contents of his pockets. He turned over a Kindle and a headphones, but the assailant still stabbed him in his upper left back. The victim is in stable condition at St. Luke’s Hospital.

According to the victim, his assailant was a male black in his late teens, 5’8 to 5’10, wearing a red hat, white shirt, sweatshirt, blue jeans and black boots.

Update: Police have released a surveillance video of the suspect.

We are actively investigating a robbery/non-fatal stabbing at West 88 St./Columbus-Amsterdam Aves. #800577TIPS #YourCityYourCall

Thank you, Mayor de Blasio ! Thank you for eliminating stop, question, frisk. Other than daily knife attacks and stabbings, all is well in progressive NYC.

This is pretty terrifying, especially when one considers it happened at 5 pm when it was still light out. Wishing the best for the victim, and hoping they get a handle on all these recent stabbings.

I actually witnessed this happen while trapped on a bus unable to help. All I could do was watch the assailant run up Columbus with his pants hanging below his butt and earphone cord trailing behind. Twenties to early thirties, about 5’11” and thin. Obviously not going to try to tackle someone wielding a deadly weapon, but I carry Mace and would have really enjoyed unloading in his face.

Maybe if people like the Walton’s didn’t stock pile an enormous amount of money then the killer could go work at the Gap and support himself and not have to go around being the KILLER!

This is a very interesting way to look at things. Part of me really feels for people who come from broken inner-city homes, living lives of poverty, with very little chance of breaking the cycle. But as for the ones who commit violent crime, I can only say that I hope to protect my loved ones and myself from them – they are just incredibly dangerous.

How would stop and frisk have prevented this, when it can be surmised that they we’re using a pocket knife or razor blade? Neither of these objects are illegal.

In fact, almost all the slashings/stabbings were done with completely street legal knives/razorblades.

In reply to Jimbo, I figured the part about his pants hanging down below his butt would have sufficed.

within the last two years, the UWS has gone down hill. stabbings, gun and gang violence; makes you want to move to be safe. We justify it and say, it’s all over. Maybe so but it also doesn’t seem as if the police or community is doing anything about it. A sad situation for the UWS.

Your story does not sound plausible, but if you wanted to help you had several options: call 911, take a photo or video, alert the bus driver and passengers to stop and look so they could take photos and be witnesses too. You’re a useless (and racist) POS, or just a troll who saw nothing. Either way, GFY.

The facts about stop and frisk (or stop, question and frisk) are more complicated than Mr. David might suggest. While Mayor de Blasio has supported the reduction in its use, the number of stop and frisks declined greatly in Mayor Bloomberg’s last year in office when a federal judge ruled that the City was using it unconstitutionally. When you have 680,000 stops a year, largely based on nothing but the color of someone’s skin, you have a discriminatory practice intended to harass, not prevent crime. Stop and frisk is allowed if there is reasonable grounds, which there might even have been in this case. But only if an officer is present, of course. Unfortunately, there wasn’t one.

Actually, most folding knives are illegal in NYC. Very strict knife laws here. Remember the boyscout who got arrested in the subway when a cop saw his folding knife in his pocket? We are pretty much defenseless in NYC.

What has happened to the formatting of the comments? Why is there no longer any threading, wherein replies made to a specific post would appear directly underneath it?

Why do I seem to be the only one who has noticed this radical change?

Oh, but now the new ridiculous liberal meme is we “over incarcerate”. Obviously we don’t incarcerate enough. Also, most poor people don’t go around stabbing people – or live on the street – they bunk up and find ways to make ends meet – stop making excuses for socio-paths.

What does being homeless have to do with this issue? Do you just wait for violent altercations to arise so you can use it as an opportunity to complain about homeless people?

Wnyc has been rallying lately for reparations. They are well deserved and would
Finally solve the crime problem. I think every white person should be required to pay 30% of their yearly income to a fund that all people of color can draw from up to 50g a year to help defray expenses and make up for all the mean selfishness of white people.
Vote Sanders and make it happen!

This is false information. If cops see someone walking down the street with a bulge under their shirt in the shape of a gun, they will no longer stop, QUESTION, and frisk them. And they will not even consider it if the person is black, as they know that the new leaders of the city will scream racism. Welcome to New York Crime City.

To “Josh” if that comment was for me. You have no idea since you weren’t there. What I saw took place over the span of 15 seconds. If you think someone can take out a cell phone, initiate the camera and take a picture all the while being caught off guard by a senseless act of street barbarism, then you are a clueless idiot. So, anyone who describes the single most defining characteristic of a criminal suspect is racist for speaking the truth, you are part of the politically correct problem that’s causing this city to go all to Hell.

And as the buss was passing by, I also saw the white mini van stopped at the corner with two guys helping the victim. He took off his dark jacket and there was a large blood stain on the back of his white shirt. But what do I know? I didn’t see anything.

Well, only half kidding, the WNYC part is true. But then they do speak for most “around here”, do they not? And how many seemingly preposterous events have become reality in the past few years. Not one for non sequiturs but the epitaph for white people should read “nice guys finish last”
