MORNING BULLETIN: BICYCLIST DIES, SCHOOL ZONING, TOM BRADY’S OGRE-FACE

August 24, 2015 Weather: Partly cloudy, with a high of 87 degrees.

Notices:
Check out our calendar for this week. Central Park’s annual outdoor film series starts Tuesday and Lincoln Center will put on a free show Friday of West Side Story, which is set in the neighborhood that the performing arts center replaced.

The zoning committee of CEC3, the Upper West Side version of a school board, will meet at 6:30 p.m. at the Joan of Arc complex (154 West 93rd, room 204) on Monday night. With the Upper West Side’s school district potentially getting rezoned this year, it could a be a good introduction to the process for parents interested in this issue. Rezoning is bound to be a very hot topic this year. Here’s the agenda.

News:
Congressman Jerry Nadler
, who represents the Upper West Side, explains why he’s going to vote for the Iran nuclear inspections deal. He was the first Jewish congressional rep from New York to agree to support the deal.

A bicyclist died last week after a July crash. An 82-year-old man from Morningside Heights named Ben Jone was found lying on the Riverside Park bike path around 79th street with a head injury on July 23. He had gone out for a bike ride. Jone died last week. “Jone’s wife, Kathleen, 79, believed he was not wearing a helmet at the time of the crash. When she last saw him leaving their apartment to take a ride on July 23, he was wearing only a baseball cap and had a tennis racket slung across his back, in case he happened upon a pickup game in the park…Ben, who is originally from South Korea and moved to New York City in the late 1960s, taught himself to play the piano. He would play Beethoven or Chopin after work to unwind, while his wife would cook, she said.”

The developers who bought the Camden Hotel on 95th street also bought the garage next door. “The two sites offer a combined 85,000 buildable square feet, according to Certes.”

brady-sketchJane Rosenberg, the courtroom artist who drew Tom Brady to look like the ogre that he truly is, lives on the Upper West Side! “I apologize to Tom Brady for not making him as good-looking as he is, O.K.?”

Debra Fisher, an occupational therapist at the Manhattan School for Children (PS 333) who goes above and beyond for children with disabilities, was suspended last year on very thin charges of “theft of services” and conflict of interest. Now the inquiry that led to the suspension is being called inaccurate. “What did the ‘theft’ involve? Supposedly sending fund-raising emails on school time to help the boy [with cerebral palsy] raise money for his book.”

This means more people with cars and fewer places for parking them.

I expect that will have implications.

Wow @ “theft of services”! OK! Perhaps an investigation should be made into her superiors email accounts and usage of time to ensure they aren’t guilty of “theft of services” too. SMH!

Glad at least one NY politician stood up for the Iran deal. FYI to all NY politicians…you are supposed to work for the interests of the US…not Israel.

H: You win on one but lose on the other:

Re: You are SO RIGHT on “Perhaps an investigation should be made into her superiors email accounts and usage of time”

EXCEPT I wouldn’t call them “superiors” as they are definitely NOT superior to anyone, except maybe to a cockroach, and even that is doubtful.
Perhaps call them “supervisors” or “those good at taking Dept. of Ed. tests for administrative positions” OR, as we veteran classroom teachers often called them,
“Butt-kissing Dept. of Ed. LACKEYS”

NOW, you are so WRONG on “FYI to all NY politicians…you are supposed to work for the interests of the US…not Israel.”
1). Iran is NOT a threat to the U.S., BUT it is a VERY DISTINCT THREAT to Israel’s continued existence.
2) Many of Rep. Nadler’s constituents are Pro-Israel and want their Representatives to support THEIR INTERESTS.

Fair points ScooterStan. I totally get that some of Rep. Nadler’s would not like him to vote for the deal and I’m sure they will try to make him pay a price for that vote via voting for someone else or not funding his campaign. Fair enough! But as you point out Iran is not a threat to the U.S. so that is what I care about first and foremost. I don’t necessarily buy the argument that Iran is a threat to Israel because only one of the two countries actually posses nuclear weapons at the moment and that is Israel. They could defend themselves if they had to but I suspect they need the “boogie man” threat of Iran to perpetuate their behavior throughout the region and to continue the flow of money from Washington to Israel (without a “threat”, the money dries up).

Fantastic photo by Scott. As for Jane Rosenberg’s sketch of Tom Brady, all I can say is, “Lurch.” Kudos, Jane, for portraying a man whose fame has turned to infamy by cheating when he didn’t have to. It’s like Hercules juicing.

I’m afraid I don’t really use Instagram — the problem is that I don’t shoot with a phone, and you have to jump though silly hoops to get non-phone photos onto Instagram. Also, Instagram mandates a square photo size (and I seldom make square photos).

But I do publish to Facebook (where I don’t have those restrictions) and you’re welcome to connect to me there:

I also keep a small (and, to be honest, in need of updating) site here:

In any case, thanks for looking! -Scott

Correction:
Nadler was the first NY Congressional rep to support the deal, not the first congressional rep.

Scott, looking at that picture I realized that what I see is proof of God.

Re: “…what I see is proof of God.”

Guess God, like Beauty, is in the ‘eye of the beholder’.

However, that photo DOES prove:
1) water evaporates from the earth, rising into the atmosphere where it and condenses into odd forms called “clouds”;

2) said “clouds” sometimes block the “rays” of what is called the “sun” and this produces interesting-but-brief displays of light; and

2a) some less sophisticated folk think they can see the face of God in the clouds…others see the face of Dog; and

3) if a talented photographer patiently waits long enough (s)he will capture some very striking images so strong that it will cause some of the less-sophisticated amongst us to point and emit “oooh’s and aaah’s”

Today’s Science-For-Atheists lesson is over.

Well ScooterStan, if someone doesn’t think as you do, they are “less sophisticated”. How snarky of you. Perhaps you can graduate to name calling ala Donald Trump. Easy to hide behind a computer.

Shocking!! A teacher actually goes above and beyond her job description and is accused of theft of services.

Meanwhile the former head of the Queens Public Library robbed thousands from the NYC piggy bank and Bloombucks and his crony Junket Sadistic Con wasted tons of $$ on junk street furniture and pedestrian malls we did not need — money that really could have been used to improve the quality of life at schools that lack proper equipment.
