The Sing for Hope program is back this summer, distributing colorful pianos throughout New York for people to play. Four of the pianos are set to be placed on the Upper West Side. The program runs from June 5 to June 21.
Sing For Hope is an arts nonprofit that produces programming for schools, community centers and under-served communities. The Sing for Hope piano project has been going on for several years. Artists paint and decorate the pianos and then they are placed in 50 locations throughout the city. People have started impromptu concerts or simply played solitary songs on them. One year there were 88 pianos placed in Lincoln Center and people had a ball.
When the program is over, the pianos are donated to schools.
The pianos will be placed in the following local locations this year (click here for the full list citywide):
Central Park (Glade Arch)
Central Park (Literary Walk)
Goddard Riverside/Bernie Wohl Center (Columbus between 91st and 92nd)
Lincoln Center

Who knows what they do when it’s raining? Are the pianos covered? Pushed under overhangs? I worry about them being ruined.
Hi Roseann,
Great question!
Each piano is installed with an attached custom fit heavy duty tarp. Every piano is also assigned a “piano buddy” (which could be one or more people).
The piano buddies are always on the lookout for inclement weather and if it looks like rain, they or any passerby can cover the piano with the protective tarp.
If you have interest in becoming a piano buddy, get in touch with Sing for Hope!

ZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZ
I have been following Nick’s career.. what an amazing artist. Not only is he featured in major museums he donated his time and talents to this great cause.
Does anyone know if these pieces will be for sale after the event?
