A reader took this photo of three young people hanging onto the back of an uptown express train pulling out of the 96th street station today around 6 p.m. Our tipster says it was either the 2 or 3 train (or possibly the 5).
Do we even need to say how dumb this is? Please, parents remind your children that these stunts too often end in death. Here’s a recent New York Times story about more youthful stunts gone bad.
Update: Read witness accounts of the incident here.
Ah, yes — clear candidates for the Darwin Awards, https://www.darwinawards.com/
“Natural selection deems that some individuals
serve as a warning to others. Who are we to disagree?
The next generation, ever and anon, is descended from the survivors.”
And you never did anything dangerously dumb when you were young, that’s for sure.
ALL kids do dumb stuff, but most have the common sense to NOT do anything foolish that will end their lives, asshat
Well, dumb as it may be let’s give them a little credit – they’re not glued to their mobile phones.
does anyone less see the fighting skull below them? or do I need more coffee….
Whoa! I didn’t even notice the skull until you pointed it out! Do you think it could be photoshopped into the picture?
DUMB KIDS! Are the police trying to find out who these dumb jerks are? Maybe they attend a school nearby….and some of their classmates would turn them in for a small reward. Their parents should be held responsible as well.
Oh, yes, absolutely! We all know that parents must watch and accompany their children 24/7/365, until they are at least 18. Anything less simply amounts to reckless endangerment.
Are the police investigating LMAO. Welcome Uptown, this happens so often what could they even do!?
yes, very dumb. also “subway surfing” or “train hopping” is an old NYC tradition.
how do you intend to hold the parents responsible?
I’ve seen early movies of Old New York, say around 1920ish, with the street urchins hitching rides on the back of trucks driving through heavy traffic.
I’ve seen this movie; doesn’t end well.
The same day a woman dies just walking between cars on the 1 up in Inwood.
Hah, we used to do that back when I was a kid in the early 1970s. Yes we called it train-hopping, Bruce. ‘Surfing’ is riding on top. Back then it wasn’t dangerous at all because there were many more handholds on the back. Many of them don’t exist anymore. So it is a lot more dangerous now. As many as six of us used to pile on to the back. It was great fun especially on the northern part of the #1, when it gets out of doors. Good way to catch a ride when you just missed the doors closing too.
Denton, I’m glad to see there’s a real NYer here… who doesn’t want these kids put in jail for a couple of weeks, not to mention their parents. Though I hope they stop doing it. too dangerous.
We used to do “train hopping” on the LIRR out in Queens, as well as “elevator surfing”, which was quite dangerous…
man, some people really ARE ticked off about that single ride 25-cent MTA fare hike!
You keep on knocking but you can’t get in.
