Following a domestic violence incident, a 34-year-old man barricaded himself into a room at 308 West 94th street on Wednesday afternoon for two hours until negotiators convinced him to come out, according to NYPD.
Police were first called to the building, which houses homeless families, at 1:36 p.m. A woman had run out of a room at the shelter screaming for help. “She was punched in the face repeatedly and her eye was swollen,” said Captain Marlon Larin, commanding officer of the 24th precinct.
The woman refused transportation to the hospital, and was treated on the scene.
The police response was considerable, with several units flooding the block, including members of the Emergency Services Unit and hostage negotiators. Officers went to the room where the woman was staying and yelled through the door for suspect Darrell Turner to come out, but Turner refused, saying they needed a warrant, Larin said. Police were able to slip a camera into the room and saw that Turner had barricaded himself in with furniture, Larin added. Turner had said something like “If you come in, you’re gong to be sorry,” but was not brandishing a weapon and did not make specific threats, according to Larin.
There was no indication that Turner was a threat to himself or others so “there was no reason to break the door down.”
“I thought we’d be there all night,” Larin said.
But after two hours of near-constant talking, the NYPD got Turner out and charged him with misdemeanor assault. Depending on whether the victim wants to press charges, the case could be handled in criminal or family court, Larin said.
CORRECTION: 308 West 94th street is not a homeless shelter. It is an SRO that is sometimes used as an emergency shelter. We had been told by NYPD that it is a shelter. The Hotel Alexander, a separate building, is at 306 West 94th street. Apologies for the error.
Another homeless shelter? How many is that in a 2 block radius?
Isn’t this all part of the UWS liberal mentality? Don’t you want to provide housing for the less fortunate among us? Or are you just another NIMBY liberal??
Uh…you are using the word liberal wrong and in the wrong context.
Liberals, progressives and democrats have had a very strong history of bringing you clean water, free highways, public schools, public housing, public libararies, protected preserves and wildlife.
So..I don’t know why you are using the word liberal…but we liberals do help the poor.
You mistaken the commentor RSDresident for a liberal..the proper labelsare “Elitist right-wing conservative corporate entitlement burgeois “i deserve more than I’ve worked for” asshole.
Get your label right.
Correct this article WESTSIDERAG this is not a homeless shelter normal people live in this building. Check it out your self.
Okay, we’ll look into it. NYPD had told us it is a homeless shelter. WSR
The homeless shelters are on 95 street. Only. Both 306 and 306 were one building before now they have different owners.308 is simply known as 308.
94th-97th are west of west end ave essentially no go areas for my kids because of all the weird homeless shelters, SROs, and registered sex offenders living there. Oh, and there’s an elementary school between 95th-96th streets.
Just another day in paradise, such a wonderful addition to the UWS. The shelters on 94th and 95th have made the news 3 weeks in a row now, can they make it 4? Stay tuned…
But please understand that these shelters have absolutely no negative impact on the neighborhood 🙂
it’s amazing brave Sam can survive amidst the endless murder and mayhem on W. 93rd street. have we even confirmed that this is a “homeless shelter”? An SRO, maybe… i don’t think a “shelter” exists at that site. But WSR will find out.
Let’s note that this was a domestic violence incident. of course all domestic violence incidents are deplorable. But this is the first one i have seen reported in WSR. I’m quite confident that, in such a large neighborhood, there have been MANY domestic violence incidents in the past year… including some in rich condo buildings. I’m just wondering why this is the only one reported in WSR? Was it because of the police “stand off”?
Sadly, domestic violence is fairly common, among all income groups. I’m sure that is the case on the UWS.
WSR has posted a correction.. .this is an SRO, not a “homeless shelter.”
Police responded to 280,531 domestic violence incidents in NYC in 2013: 765 incidents per day. I am sure many thousands of these incidents were on the UWS. Will each of these be covered now in the WSR? or only when they occur in what is considered a “homeless shelter”?
Facts on NYC domestic violence:

I have wondered the same thing. Is WSR going to start reporting on any and every crime that occurs on the UWS or just the ones that involve the individuals most readers of this site would prefer to be rid of?Ii don’t recall any coverage of the CBS money watch anchor that was choked and beaten by her husband on the UWS last year..pretty sure that was a violent crime that occurred in the neighborhood.
that crime doesn’t count. it wasn’t committed by a homeless person or one of their relatives.
Thank you the correction WestSider.
I will add that i used to live in this building before and i move down block and its frequent that Police and any emergency vehicles are always entering this building.Same thing goes for 319. Just last week there was more police cars.
I love reading this website because it really helps me put things into perspective…which is a nice way of saying “The vast majority of you have so much to be thankful for but instead choose to complain endlessly about petty things.” It’s exhausting. Get over yourselves.
Yet here you are complaining about people complaining, nice job!
Sassy Lou, as a life-long Democrat having served many a meal to the homeless and hae a long history of charitable giving, I take offense to your comment that I think “I deserve more than I work for”. You know nothing about my struggles or my tiny apartment or my 2 jobs or my personal connection to homelessness, etc… I still have a right to think that concentrating shelters in a small geographical area is not a good idea. For many reasons.
