Image of painting by Peter Salwen.
Two compelling art shows recently went up on the Upper West Side.
PAINTINGS
Peter Salwen, a local artist and author, has paintings up at St. Agnes library on Amsterdam between 81st and 82nd through the end of the month. I happen to love the painting above, Rain and Smoke on Amsterdam. The exhibition poster is below.
Salwen also has paintings up until the 19th at the Broadway Community Mall gallery, West 96th & Broadway.
STAINED GLASS
Another exhibition by stained glass artist Joseph Cavalieri is on view at the Church of St. Paul the Apostle at Columbus Avenue and 60th street. It’s a cheeky look at our current addictions depicted using ancient stained glass methods. It’s up until February 28.
“Openings and the Church of St. Paul the Apostle proudly presents “Deliver Us From Our Addictions”, a solo exhibition featuring hand-painted illuminated stained glass works by East Village artist Joseph Cavalieri. All 10 stained glass panels were made specifically for exhibition at the Church of St. Paul the Apostle.
This may be the first time ever Twinkies and Endora have ever been seen in a stained glass window in a church. (Agnes Moorhead in her role of Endora on the television series Bewitched)
The exhibit’s name is “Deliver Us From Our Addictions” and it features highly detailed stained works by Joseph Cavalieri’s . It is a meditative and somewhat comical series of 21st century dependencies in stained glass. The series illustrates a grouping of mental and physical addictions to which we moderns are prone, ranging from consumerism, mind-altering drugs, smoking, over-eating, love obsession, to fashion victims and outright evil!”
“Gym Addiction” by Joseph Cavalieri. Hand painted and silk-screened stained glass, metal, wall mounted LED light box.
I love this art by Peter Salwen, and am seriously considering buying one. I don’t know the artist, so this is not a “paid” promo. I just saw the work on a recent trip to Library and LOVED it. I will be going back to look again on Tuesday. Reminds me of much of the early 20th Century Ashcan School. He’s a really fine painter, and not expensive.
I do know the artist, and he is a wonderful guy! (and this is not a “paid” promo either, haha)
I too love his work, and hope/plan to buy when I can. Pete’s use of light and color is absolutely delightful, and he captures our beautiful city the way I see it. Love it!
