There’s some good news and some bad news about the Upper West Side dining scene below.
Red Farm, the hotly anticipated Chinese restaurant on Broadway between 77th and 78th streets in the former home of Fatty Crab, is getting ready to open soon — in early March it was supposedly just eight weeks away, and now they’ve hoisted a lighted sign into the window. Get ready for some dumplings stuffed with lobster, and lots of other unique dishes. “Signature items include clever dim sum creations for which Ng is known and small plates: Pac Man dumplings; yuzu wasabi shrimp; mushroom spring rolls that evoke a chanterelle mushroom; and a sculptural chicken salad, a grilled vegetable salad that mimics a garden plot.” Our first story on the restaurant is here.
The Sunburnt Calf on 79th street served its last brunch today. But don’t despair! Two new eateries are planning to open in its place: “MooLife Group Founder and Owner Heathe St. Clair is handing over the keys to longtime employees Tim Harris and Matilda Boland, who are introducing three new dining and nightlife destinations under a new restaurant group, Southern Cross Hospitality. Set to debut in summer 2013 are: Hawker Bar, a Southeast Asian restaurant that is taking over the Sunburnt Calf’s Brooklyn space and opening on June 3; Burke & Wills, an Australian bistro moving into the ground level of the former Upper West Side location of the Sunburnt Calf in July; and Manhattan Cricket Club, an old-world cocktail lounge opening above Burke & Wills in September.”
A new sign is in the window at Lansky’s, the Jewish-style deli on Columbus between 70th and 71st that closed in February: For Rent. It sounds like Jalapeno, a Mexican spot owned by the same owners, isn’t going to go into the space as we had expected. The sign had initially said “Not available for rent.” Thanks to Richard for the tip.
New Chinese spot Legend, on 72nd street just West of Columbus, isn’t getting off to a great start. Just weeks after opening, it was shuttered by the Department of Health for a very long list of violations. From the list of violations, it seems to have serious problems with food being potentially contaminated, adulterated or held at the wrong temperature. The restaurant racked up 104 violations points (28 points generally earns you a C). Thanks to Steven and Diana for the tips, and Steven for the photo.
Disgusting !!!!
104 violations ?!?!?!?!
What are they serving : moo goo gai rat/cockroach ?????
THe sign on the door says “Kitchen closed for renovations”. Maybe should be “replacement”?
I hope they don’t go away. I’m looking forward to another exceptional authentic Sichuan option in the neighborhood!
